I've had the strangest thing that happens about every 2-3 weeks. While the phone is idle, it will suddenly begin playing a tune from the iPod function. Since no headphones are plugged in, it plays loudly through the speaker. It has happend with the phone set to "silent" (in a meeting last night) or with the sound on. It happend with the latest firmware (3.1.2) as well as the previous version. It has happened a total of four times in the past three months.

I'm in the process of resetting the phone as "new" at the recommendation of the folks at the Apple Store.

Is this a commonly seen problem? Any ideas?

I'm told that if the reset doesn't solve the problem, it may be hardware.

Is your phone possibly being shaken when this happens?

Mine has done this once. I have seen a few posts here about the problem. Don't know how to fix it. Guess it could be problematic if it happens in a meeting even if phone is on silent. Is having shake to shuffle "on" a trigger to make this happen Cosmic?

Just in case, I turned off "shake to shuffle" in settings.

Sounds like a short somewhere in the headphone Jack. It thinks it's getting a "play" command from the earbuds. With no earbuds actually in there, it will play out the speaker. Try blasting it gently with compressed air.
