I did a search and came up empty so I apologize if this is a repeat question.

My contact ringtones aren't playing when they call. It just plays the default one. I've gone back and double checked a bunch of times, but no luck. Is this a known problem with some of the firmware or am I just a moron?

When you assign the ringtone to the contact can you hear it play at that time? I would reboot the phone and check the contacts assigned ringtones again. If no luck then I would a hard reset and check again.

How do you hard reset a phone you can't pull the battery out of?

Hold the power and the home button simultaneously...the phone will power down...don't let go until the apple shows onscreen.

I tried that and still no luck. Any other ideas?

Back to square one. Are the contacts that aren't working right using numbers from the USA? Does the number ringing in match the number on your contact?
You never answered the question of can you hear the ringtone when you assign it to the contact?

Okay, sorry about missing that question earlier.

1 - Yes the numbers are from the USA.
2 - Yes the numbers match.
3 - Yes I can hear the ringtone when I assign it to the contact.

I had already turned the phone on and off several times today (I was really close to mexico and conserving battery) and did the hard shutdown right before my wife called tonight. Still no luck. I haven't done the latest firmware update, could that be it? I need to unlock the phone and didn't want to update it and screw myself.

Thanks for you help on this.

I figured it out. I had duplicate contacts from when I originally setup my phone and synched with my MacBook and also via MobileMe. I just had to delete the duplicate contacts.

Glad you worked it out. Never heard of the problem before. Thanks for the update.
