Ok so i've been out of the jailbreak loop/info since 2.1.

Im running stock FW 3.0 and i would like to know whats the best thing to do as far as either staying with my current firmware and reaping the benefits of whats with 3.0 (i dont know much anymore although i did hear that 3.0 is good for unlocking and jailbreaking i could be wrong).

London, currently 3.1.2 (Apple's latest firmware) cannot be unlocked if you update via iTunes. This process will upgrade your baseband permanently and there is no known way to unlock the new baseband, as of now. What you can do is use the new PwnageTool (Mac only) to upgrade to 3.1.2 and keep your old baseband that is still able to be unlocked.

You said unlocking is important for you so I wouldn't go any other route. You can use blackra1n to jailbreak the 3.1.2 stock firmware (instead of using a custom 3.1.2 ipsw like PwnageTool does) from Apple but you cannot unlock it, as your baseband is permanently upgraded.

Im pretty sure they dont have an unlock yet for 3.1, so I guess you wouldnt be able to update yet since its important for you. Im sure someone else would know for sure though.

i have had 3.1 jb'd and i have 3.1.2 jailbroken via pwanagetool :)
3.1 does have unlock so if you update you have to make it in such a way that you keep the substrate from 3.1, at least that's what i hear, but i've unlocked it also via ultrasn0w in cydia.

1-download the latest version of pwanagetool(i think it's 3.1.4 or something like that)

2-have the ORIGINAL firmware

3-run pwanagetool and follow instructions on the screen

4-at the end it's gonna say go into itunes and do a special restore when you pick the custom firmware on the desktop.

bam!!!!! you got 3.1.2!

then to get the full unlock get ultrasn0w through cydia.

Here you go London, step by step instructions on using pwnage tool to update to 3.1.2 - this is the only way to guarantee an unlock - as you wont have updated the baseband (which is currently not unlockable)

If you update through itunes and then use blackra1n to JB then you may not have an unlock in the future.

No no, its fine iNinja!!! Jailbreaking back in the 2's FW was easy compared to now. I just dont want to accidentally upgrade the BB and screw myself over. Worse comes to worse, ill hav to shell out the cash and just buy a Factory unlocked iphone 3gs. May as well since price is like OMGWTFBBQ.

On a side note... Jailbreaking is no issue for me, and i've used pwnagetool before but alot has prolly changed from the 2's days.

You are correct, young Jedi. PwnageTool will put your iPhone into DFU mode automatically, I believe.

a-there's actually a lot of lags for the 3.1 which 3.1.2 does fix. that's the main purpose for the update. (at least that's how i take it).

b-like kaba stated blackra1n is great for jailbreaking 3.1.2 if you're on a pc and if you're on a mac the best i would say is pwanagetool 3.1.4 . if you can get pwanagetool for windows i would highly suggest that.

Well, thanks to London for keeping his thread alive. I'm going to ask for a little advice as well. I am JB with 3.0 (3G 8gb). Please tell me the benefit of upgrading to 3.1.2. From what I've read, there doesn't seem to be too much to get excited about. I have noticed that there are a few APPs that specifically require 3.1 or greater to function (Yelp, Red Laser come to mind). I can live without those apps. Truth be told, I find the time involved with JBing is way too long. I'm referring to getting everything back that you've tweaked via winterboard etc. I know there's aptbackup but I am not sure if that restores all your settings and things like that. Plus, there are Cydia based 3rd party APPs I've paid for that I'm concerned will not think I paid for them if I re-jail break. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I am sure someone out there can enlighten me.

don't worry about it. the more details you put the better it is to help. well, in my experience 3.1.2 fixes all the bugs and lags that 3.1 had when it came out. it's a bit more smooth and yeah there are a couple of extra apps that you can get. cydia and winterboard weren't working well with 3.1 (one of the bugs), but that is fixed and it runs great. if you're running 3.0 and you're happy, you don't really have to, but if you have 3.1, then i would advise to update. i hope that gives some information about your question.

The 3.1.2 update + jailbreaking really cuts down on the lag. Unfortunately, I cannot be sure whether it was the actual firmware update or the method of the simple, clean jailbreak that geohot's blackra1n did. And, as far as paying for applications via Cydia, you'll be able to redownload them at no charge. I've done this plenty of times. Don't worry.

Pwnagetool wont let me get past the browse for ipsw.

You only need to go into DFU mode if you're currently stock.

You need to make your own custom FW (or download a custom FW someone else made). PT will use the 3.1.2 file you downloaded from iClarified to make it.

You need to use SSH. It also has to be in a .png file. There are some good guides on the MMi website. They also have quite a few custom carrier images you can download and install through SSH. If you want a carrier logo for another carrier apart from AT&T it's a simple case of renaming a file. Very simple.

Icy is pretty much the same as Cydia, some people prefer it, but I think it's buggy. It was forever crashing for no reason. When I uninstalled packages, it didn't remove them.

Yeah, Icy doesnt install correctly or remove correctly. Ill stick to Cydia since its what i know. You are right about the Reloading delay...my biggest annoyance with Cydia is when searching for something the typing is always laggy.

I guess its really a hardware issue and the only way would be to carry it to apple (after making it stock)...however i need to unlock, and they would just give me a new iphone on the latest firmware and baseband.
