Heres what happened, My brother gave me and iPhone 3G and I tried to unlock it and jailbreak it. So I used redsn0w, but I didn't know that redsn0w didn't support 3.1.2 firmware. After that I restored it and it is now at the point where the iPhone needs to be activated (Where it tells you to put an unlocked SIM card in). So now i try blackra1n and it doesn't work. I think its because it either doesn't unless you are on the springboard/menu or what my brother's friend said "blackra1n and redsn0w are trying to exploit the same intentions and that is what is keeping your iPhone at this state".

Please help, my brother was planning to resell this iPhone this week, and he can't sell it if it doesn't even work right.

are you on a mac or pc?

try restoring back to the original firmware you had and then get pwangetool 3.14 or something like that and then download the ORIGINAL firmware NOT from itunes via google it. run pwanagetool and then follow the on screen instructions.

Sorry, I'm on PC. Although do you know if there's a way to use pwnage on PC? or how to run Mac OSX on virtual PC?

Blackra1n doesn't unlock your phone. Only jailbreaks it.

Since you updated and you don't have at&t then no, there is nothing you can do to get it back running again unless you sign up for at&t and activate it. I think your phone may be officially, unofficially, bricked.

that's not really true because mine was locked when i first upgraded to 3.1. i'm not sure how i did it, but i believe i went back to 3.0 via redsn0w then got the firmware and jailbroke it via pwangetool. in order to upgrade to 3.1 or higher it's best with pwanage tool. just remember that if you do it this way then you MUST get the ORIGINAL firmware via google or dev team blog. run/follow on screen instructions in pwanage tool and there ya go. it's the same way with 3.1.2 via pwangetool 3.14 or something like that. you can get everything on dev team.

I heard that with 3.1.2 you cannot go backwards, downgrade, to a previous firmware. Also, the 3.1.2 blocks the unlock until the devs find one for 3.1.2. Apple seems to be getting better at making it difficult for people using different carriers.

yes, you can't really downgrade or more like you wouldn't want to. 3.1.2 DOES NOT block the unlock IF YOU DO IT CORRECTLY. as long as it's jailbroken it's unlockable. trust me, i have it  yes apple gets better, but hackers get wiser too FTW!!!!!

In order to sort out the confusion:

To the OP, if you updated your iPhone's firmware through iTunes to either 3.1 or 3.1.2 then you're iPhone is currently locked and NOT unlockable at this point in time.

correct! but dev team will take care of that soon.

wait... i just realized something... if it does get locked then you can get it unlocked, but you would have to restore it from scratch (new phone), no? cause that's what happened to me. i tried updating it and it got locked, but i got it jailbroken with the previous jailbreak i had and then i used pwanagetool to get it updated and unlocked.
