When I turn off the wifi on my phone a blue "E" symbol comes up in place of the internet bars and I'm still able to access the Internet even with the wifi turned off. How am I getting a connection?

Through AT&T's EDGE network. It's a lot slower than wifi, though. You can also access the internet through the 3G network, which is faster than EDGE but slower than wifi.

You will have four symbols come up in the same place.

A small blue circle stands for GPRS.
An 'E' stands for EDGE
A '3G' symbol obviously stands for 3G.
Finally your wifi symbol.

All of these will give you an internet connection. GPRS is the slowest, followed by EDGE then 3G.

You're paying for it. No matter who your carrier is.

If you dont have a data plan and your paying as you go you could be paying some extortionate fees - check out your data plan

In that case, you might want to call Fido and have them disable data or add a data plan, so you don't get charged by the KB.
