What's the difference??

Is there anything similar that works between different OSs?

I like the name Ping! better, so I went with that one. :) Seems like everyone else did, too (at least everyone on this board).

As far as apps that work cross-platform... AIM or Yahoo perhaps? Those types of big messaging services have clients available for almost all mobiles.

I have both but most everyone I know uses Ping! and I like it better as well.

Here's another vote for Ping! - though in all fairness I've never tried WhatsApp.

WhatsApp needed you to have the persons cell number in order to message them - although I liked the UI better.

Im sticking with Ping!

ping!
And there are only a few more things I think the app needs to be "perfect" . Like blocking these dill-weeds that ping you "just to test" and then keep pinging you.
and it's own contact list...

I haven't played with either (although I did buy Ping!), but the cell phone requirement of WhatsApp weighed on my decision about even trying it.

Why would needing a cellphone number be less desirable than needing a Ping! ID?

Because people you give a Ping! ID may not be ones you want to give your cell phone number. For example, if I want to "chat" with someone on these forums, I don't necessarily want to give out my phone number since chances are I wouldn't know them very well.

This new version of Ping! does feel and work a lot better, thus far. Like everyone else has said a few more options are needed. But, yes, I agree, Ping! is great in the fact that I don't need to give out my mobile number...

But, if WhatsApp changes that, well, we really could have a competition on our hands.

I'm still getting double posts occasionally in Ping!, even with the update.

Odd, I've never received a duplicate message. Do you receive duplicates all the time, or just from specific people?

I've gotten duplicates as well, even with the update. It never happens if you "slide to view" your ping as it comes in... only if you go to check it later.

Probably why I've never seen it. Plus, with Ping! I don't have it show me the message, i.e. preview till I open the app...
