Newbie,

I was wondering if anyone bought a refurbished Iphone and if so have you had any problems with it? Looking to make the switch and short on cash...I would love to get the 3gs but $99 for the 16Gb sounds like a great deal. Any advice would be great. Cheers!

Refurbs are just as good as new ones.

Thanks for the info. Is the 3gs really all that hype? I keep hearing about probs with the 3g, but I do understand that all phones no matter what you get will have its quirks.

I asked the Genius Bar at Apple what exactly a refurbished phone was, new or used or in between?

The outside of the phone is BRAND NEW and the only part(s) that can be re-used are the computer chips on the inside. If they meet the right specs then they are deemed "OK."

they wouldnt sell it if they thought it would be an issue. they test them enough that i would trust it.

It's well worth the extra money IMO. It's a lot faster because of the upgraded processor and RAM. It has a better camera with touch to focus and auto focus, video recording with editing and direct uploads to Youtube etc, a compass (necessary for augmented reality and orienting maps to the direction you're traveling). It also has extra software features not available on the other versions, such as white on black (useful in movie theaters) and battery % in the status bar, more storage space and the screen is easier to clean.

Exactly what she said, and for what it is worth, if anything on the "inside" don't go to sh*t, they will replace it. Of course with another refurbished, but a working phone nonetheless.

If all you can afford is the $99 refurb 3G it is still a good bargain. It is still a great device and leaps and bounds ahead of most competitors devices. I assume you will be under a 2yr contract. Save up and be ready to buy the latest iPhone offering as newer models evolve. Even if you bought a new 3G and had to take it back to Apple you may get a refurb replacement. As long it comes with the 1yr Apple warranty and you can take it back and experience Apple's great customer service, I think it is a good buy.

regardless of when you get the phone replaced, it depends on your Apple Care. As long as you are still covered under Apple Care they will still help you.

i have the 3gs and my wife has a 3g.
it is unbearable to use her 3g.... its that slow.
i thought that i would never use the video portion of my camera... but i was wrong...
the xtra ram is super for jailbreaking..

bottom line, if you can afford the 3gs.. do it.

How is white on black useful in movie theater's?

It's not so annoying to the other people in the theater. One of my pet peeves is people texting while at movies. You can be seated in the back row and have someone near the front of the theater distract you while they bask in the bright white light of their phone. Turning the brightness down helps, but white on black is better. Hold on and I'll take a picture. You can't do screen shots of reverse video, so I'll have to take a picture with a camera.

This is at approximately 55% brightness. Use this and turn the brightness down to about 20% and you won't annoy other people in the theater (or annoy them less than you would without doing this).

Thanks Europa I see what your saying now. I played around with Black and White before on the iPhone. What is exactly is the black and white feature on the iPhone used for? Like why did apple put that on there?
