I have been searching for an app that will tell me what's running in the background. Lately something has been chewing up my battery time. I'm new to the iphone and love it but I wish it was just a small bit more technical.
Anyway I am looking some something similar to the MS task manager that existing in windows platforms (PC and mobile) that would allow me to either see what's running and even shut it off, although that is not an absolute necessity.
I did a restart this AM and a major amount of memory was freed up.
I've dropped 30% down to 70% in an 1:45 where normally it's at 95%.
(wifi's been off since off the charger)
Thanks for any leads !!

If you ever get into 'jailbreaking' your iPhone, there is an application available in Cydia called SBSettings. In this application, you can view/end running processes... It's very nice and useful.

Waited five minutes...help teh sleep button to fire back up...it came back up showing 73% of the battery left ???

I just found the little switch to show the battery percentage. Should I keep that on or does it eat up battery life to keep it on? I have had my iphone about two months or so and just noticed that!
Says my battery is at 85%. I havent done much with the phone today so does that sound reasonable or should it be higher ...How do I use that knowledge to my advantage? Are there things I should turn off to increase my battery life?
Thanks,

No effect on battery life.

Some people choose to leave location services, 3G, WiFi, Push notifications, and bluetooth off when not in use, to maximize battery life. I leave them all on all the time and just top the battery off a couple times a day. 85% sounds about right. I have my brightness set about half way and a 2 minute auto lock, adjusting those will also help decrease battery drain.

Like Europa said, there are definitely some things you can disable when not in use. Using SBSettings (available through Cydia/jailbreaking) makes the enabling/disabling so quick and easy, and not as cumbersome as it takes on a stock iPhone. I am always on my iPhone throughout the day and never charge it until I'm ready to go to bed.
These settings dramatically improve my battery life:
- Turn Brightness down (half-way is reasonable)
- Turn off Wifi when not in use
- Turn off Location when not in use
- Turn off Bluetooth (I never use it)
- 1 minute auto-lock
I'm at 72% right now and have been on my iPhone a reasonable amount since 6 am.

A quick follow-up
The battery issues got really bad earlier this week. I review my downloaded app dates and tried to recall when the issue started and determined that a Solitaire game may have been the culprit.
Dumped the app two days ago and all is back to normal !!!
The solitaire was Sol Free Solitaire from Smallware. I cannot say if it was a conflict with something else or a bug...I would not know how to tell...but all is well now.
