Not necessarily, for the people who went to 3.1 and wish they hadn't, I think they will wait, as the OTB jailbreak is only around the corner anyway. As it says in the screen shots, there only bug fixes anyway, nothing special.

So, did the carrier update enable tethering?? (just curious)
and have you noticed any improvement at all in performance?
I actually want to know this from a 3G owner that has it installed.

Just update your iphone through iTunes. It's totally different to Restoring, you wont need to re-sync your stuff back on.

Very doubtful. AFAIK, AT&T has no intention to enable official tethering anytime soon. Your best bet is to stay on 3.0.1 and unoffically tether.

I'm doing that as I type right now however I'm considering restoring it again.
I had updated to 3.1 and was getting terrible battery life and horrible signal performance none of which I experienced before the 3.1 upgrade from 3.0.1.
So I restored 3.1 yesterday and the battery life was excellent yesterday as well as the signal strength, texts no longer took a couple minutes to send etc...
So now I just upgraded to 3.1.2 and I'm thinking I should restore it just for good measure, sure it's a PITA but it ensures the purest form of install so nothing can possibly be messed up.

Hawk I don't see that it allows for tethering. I'm not sure but battery life may be better. I charged it to 100% after the update and it's only been 25 minutes but it's still reading 100%. Seems like it usually would be 98% by now. Again it's way too early to tell.

Mine is still doing better. I have 90% at 1 hour & 10 minutes with 2 hours & 2 minutes standby. I know it won't stay like this cause that would give me 11 hours useage. I've consistently got between 5-7 hours useage the entire time on the 3GS. I usually have about 2 hours at 75% and 3.5 at 50% so we'll see later how it's doing.

All right I've run for 2 hrs and 50 min and have 63% left so it is probably the same as on 3.1 as I've used it as a typical day and it looks like I'll be around 3.5 hours at the 50% mark. So there goes wishful thinking!

I never get that close by the time I hit 50%. I'm generally at 2.5 or so- AT BEST. And this is since i got my iPhone last October.

I think the 3GS is typically supposed to get better battery life than the 3G. If I remember right.
It isn't just "supposed" to get bettery battery performance, it does. My 3G was barely able to handle 3.0. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. The 3GS runs 3.x just fine. Definetly better battery performance. This upgrade is just supposed to clean up the 3.1 bugs. I'm hopeful it will get most of them.

You guys obsess about your battery life way too much ;)
I honestly had no idea how good/bad mine was until I turned the battery percentage indicator on just long enough to get this screenshot. I hate that percentage being up there. I just plug my phone in a couple times throughout the day to keep it topped off and don't worry about it.
This is my 3GS.

i updated last night. i havent had any issues since then. i havent really tried to see if the battery is improved, but service has for sure.
I'll say that service is more "responsive"... Changing from edge to 3G, and from weak to strong seems to happen faster.
most problems seem to have cleared up. Undetermined on the battery though. I think my battery is simply dying. from 1.5 hours and beyond, my battery drops like a stone.

My service at my desk sucks, so leaving 3g on is usually my only option, but today i decided to turn the 3g off and run on edge to see if it worked and the edge is working better than the 3g usually does. i have 3 bars which is more than 3g usually gets me. after lunch im gunna unplug my phone and see about battery.

I just have to chime in and say I am VERY happy with 3.1.2, my battery life is MUCH better than any other firmware ever put out. I'm now starting to enjoy this thing and not worry so much about when to charge it.
The signal still is strange sometimes though. For instance I don't get great signal on my property. Depending on where I am I can have great 3G service or very crappy service. Sometimes the phone will show "No Service" and if I either restart it or turn airplane mode on then off again it will find the signal.
So far that's my only problem and it doesn't happen all that much. :D

3.1.2 is the best on battery life so far in my experience! :)
I never had a problem with the phone turning itself off or freezing until 3.1.2. Also, the battery didn't seem any better, maybe slightly worse.
I didn't want to restore and have to set everything up again (lazy), so I thought I would just reset network settings and drain the battery till dead right after, then fully charge. WOW, it's like I just bought a new phone. After a couple of days, no problem with turning off or freezing, and the battery is showing a real improvement !!!

I've had battery issues since 3.1, and I had hoped that it would get better with 3.1.2, but not so. I called Apple support and they said they would probably give me a new phone when I go to an Apple store. So I'll be doing that next week.

I thought my battery issues were normal for a 3gs, but since taking it in and getting an exchange, the difference is pretty noticeable. I definitely had a bad battery, and they knew this immediately upon hooking it up to their software. It's worth a visit to check. I was getting less than 5 hours usage per charge with other random oddities.

Dave I get 6-6.5 of usage since day 1 and most of that is web surfing. About half that is 3G or edge. I feel like these are good numbers for what I do. Did you go way up over 5 hours?
Right after I upgraded, my battery life all but disappeared. 1 hour of phone and the 2 hours of iPod. It was at 15% after 3.75 hours of usage. I constantly charged a lot yesterday and today I turned off push. It seemed to last a bit longer, but I am going to test again tomorrow. If it's not I'mproved with push on, then I am making a trip to the apple store. Thank God I bought apple care

Your numbers sound pretty good. My <5 hours was nearly 100% wifi with strong 3G signal in between. Even more troublesome was nosedives from ~35% to zero with no warning.
