I was able to use saurik's guide to downgrade my 3gs to 3.0 - my questions are:

1. although 3.0 supposedly had this security vulnerability...is it "safe" to remain on it for a while?

2. Once a JB solution is released for 3.1, will I be ale to upgrade to 3.1, getting rid of 3.0, and jailbreak?

Yeah, I think it's fine. IMO, the exploit was a proof of concept. The odds of an attack are slim to none. I've never heard of it happening to anyone.

You'll have to jailbreak your phone on 3.0 or 3.0.1 before you can jb on 3.1. AFAIK, starting with a jailbrokeb phone is a prereq.

everything worked great...until....i was never able to get a signal or "iPhone is Activated" message - back to 3.1 for now

Jailbreaking it should activate it.

no such luck my friend and I have read a ton of posts about the same issue - the JB went fine as I followed Saurik to the letter, but no matter what, I couldn't get an activation or signal - Ican wait.

I did get a message when I was JB'd, in Cydia, saying that I was "on file" - but I am kind of lost...

Been thinking about this....did you uncheck the 'Activate the phone' option under general settings when using Pwnage? IF you're using AT&T, you don't need this checked....

So just for fun I just went thru the process of trying to go backwards. I have the same problem. I noticed the field next to carrier says not available. I wonder if I can try installing a carrier file>

Ok so after a little research this problem is a piece of cake. Click on the like below to get your carrier stuff back then you will get cell activated. then you can jb and be back to normal

Sounds like the use of QuickPwn is to get around being stuck in the recovery mode loop. Another way to get around the recovery mode loop issue is to use iRecovery....worked like a charm for me.

I can't get my phone to downgrade. I was jailbroken on 3.0.1 and it said my phone was hashed. I added 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com to the hosts file but I get error 3002.

My understanding is that this strategy works only if you've uploaded your ECID SHSH signatures to the server Saurik had set up.

I did. It said I did. I just hope they make a regular jailbreak that works on stock 3.1 phones.
