Using Saurik's guide to downgrade Firmware

please enlghten me - am I understanding this correctly - If I follow Saurik's instructions : http://www.saurik.com/id/12#howto, will I be able to DG my 3GS to 3.0 (or is it 3.0.1) and rejailbreak with redsn0w? Will my phone end p on 3.0.1 or 3.0? Thanks

I did the purplerain thing...I am not sure if my info is on file. If I have it...how do I get it on file so I can use this alternate signing server?

Do you have your ECID SHSHs stored on saurik's server? If you don't and you're on 3.1, you're out of luck.

when I was JB, i did get a message claiming i had it on file - but the process now is totally confusing me

If it said that you had it on file in Cydia then you can down grade to the 3.0. Saurik said that very few people had their ECID for 3.0.1 stored. First thing you should do is to alter your host files to redirect it to Saurik's server. Then put it in DFU mode. If you are on 3.0 the restore will just work. If you are not on 3.0 then you will error out and get an option to restore with reformat. The second restore is going to error out as well but that is expected according to Saurik. Then just jailbreak with redsn0w or purple rain. I tried to boil down the instructions on Saurik's site for you.

I am happy to report that benefited from Saurik's server, as I stupidly upgraded from my JB'd 3.0 to 3.1 and thus has to downgrade, re-JB and then redsn0w myself up to 3.1. The downgrading was a major pain in the a$$ (followed Saurik's procedure but had to augmented it with iRecovery to deal with being stuck in the recovery loop (see:
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/07/irecovery-iphone-recovery-mode-loop-restart/ before using resn0w).

A couple of highlights from my downgrading experience.
Carefully read all instructions! :-)
Be sure to know the difference between DFU mode and recovery mode (this one was key for me)
use iRecovery is you find that you're stuck in the recovery mode loop
use AptBackup to back up those JB'd Apps. I was able to get all my JB'd apps back much, much quicker than would have otherwise be possible.

Happily....very happily JB'd again....

Hi guys, managed to jb the 3gs. I didnt know earlier that I dont have to restore before jailbreaking. Restore led to apple server verification and hence failure.

Now, I am exploring another issue. How can I jailbreak to 3.0.1 from where I am now. i.e. windows xp, 3GS jailbroken in os 3.0, may need to unlock in near future.

Any ideas?

You can use redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0.1 by using the 3.0 ipsw firmware. Just follow this guide by iClarified: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4303

- To jb to 3.0.1 using redsn0w, I must already be on os 3.0.1. "Please selet the corresponding ipsw of your CURRENT firmware.
- To get to 3.0.1, I must restore via iTunes and point to 3.0.1 ipsw.
- That's where the Apple server verification will not let proceed.

To jailbreak 3.0.1 you must select the 3.0 firmware, which you can find the download link in the guide I posted, NOT the 3.0.1 firmware...
