I was able to get a 3.1 Ipsw already pwnd with Cydia, will I be able to restore shift click and use that to be jailbroken on my 3GS windows machine?

Update: I was able to update my iPhone 3GS to 3.1 preserving my baseband to what it was at 3.0.1. Now I am jailbroken, unlocked and on 3.1. I did it by downloading a Ipsw already pwned with cydia and I did it all on Windows Vista.

I can PM you the link. Just make sure you use the right Ipsw. There are different ones with different options and devices. The one I used was 3.1 for the 3GS unactivated as I am an ATT custumer.

Pwnage Tool creates a custom made IPSW that already contains the jailbreak, Cydia, custom boot logos, and you can pre-install cydia packages. Once the IPSW is created, it is as simple as connecting your iPhone to iTunes and holding shift and clicking restore.

Redsn0w is an after-the-fact solution. With redsn0w, you would update your iPhone with the "official" firmware, and use redsn0w to "crash" the iphone allowing the jailbreak to be performed and installing Cydia. redsn0w is currently incompatible with the 3.1 firmware.

There are plenty of custom created firmwares out there created with pwnage tool. be careful what you download. Some are "hacktivated" (for use with non-ATT carriers). If you have a current iPhone plan with ATT, you do not want a hacktivated version.

Do not use DFU or restore mode when you update to your custom IPSW. Simply plug your iPhone in to your PC and shift+click restore and select your downloaded firmware.

No, you'll probably have to re-install all your apps, I would not try to restore from back up. Restore as new phone

You need both part 1 and part two, they are compressed (Zipped) once downloaded place both parts in the same folder, then you will unzip part 1 which will combine both files utomatically into a single ispw.

The file is big and some people will divide the single file in two parts. I used Winrar to uncompress them but you can probably use winzip or any program like that. Like I said, all you doo is download both Part 1 and Part 2; then put them in the same folder and uncompress part 1. The uncompress process will automatically combine the two parts and you'll end up with a single ispw.

I did that and it worked on the second try (My fault , 1st time I tried DFU mode which was wrong of me).

I'm using winrar as well...but it doesn't say its combining both files....the file is 311MB is that correct?

This seems to be a common "cosmetic issue with the missing carrier logo after jailbrake.
Some updates from iPhone Dev team:
1. Unlocked users on the 3G will probably notice that the name and/or logo of their carrier is missing, but they still have full bars and a signal. So far this seems to be purely a cosmetic issue and it doesn’t impact your signal or coverage. We hope to have this issue “fixed” when we release the 3GS compatible version of PwnageTool.
2. As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle. The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak. But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation

Go ahead and update carrier. You'll be fine.

Also: If you really want it to say AT&T (or anything else for that matter) by the signal bars, get Make It Mine in Cydia.

I think you should still be able to jailbrake using the same method you used before; the only thing you can't do at the moment is unlock as you updated the baseband by restoring with Apple's official 3.1

I have ATT. It said unavailable until I updated to carrier 5.5 thru iTunes then after rebooting the phone I had ATT and MMS

Not yet, unless you saved your 3.0 ECID SHSH files via Cydia before upgrading to 3.1. I'm sure there will be a full jailbreak for 3.1 eventually, though.

Again.... not unless you stored your ECID SHSH files on Cydia prior to the release. Part of the process in downgrading is to change a file so you are actually talking to a Cydia server not apple. If you do not have your files on the server it will give you an error.

Need to wait for awhile.

Do you already have 3.0.1 working? If so, then you don't need to restore first. Just run redsn0w and when it asks to select your firmware make sure you choose the 3.0 firmware (redsn0w is incompatible with 3.0.1 but it works just fine if you "trick" it into thinking you are on 3.0). If you do not already have the 3.0 firmware, you can find it over at iClarified I believe. Remember, you do not need to install the 3.0 firmware, just point redsn0w to it.
