Pretty sweet!!
Glad it's possible, I'll be waiting as patiently as I can for a Windows version.

No Windows....
Looks like this is the end of the road for many 3GS owners who dont have a mac.
Also the end of the road for 3GS not already jailbroken.

There are places where you can find and download custom firmwares from someone who already used Pwnage Tool. Or find a buddy with a mac and have him pwn one and send it to you. Once you have the custom firmware; iTunes, mac or windows, will be able to install it.
So its only the end of the road for windows 3gs owners who are lazy. imo.

They are developing a Windows version. It; however, will not be PwnageTool, as stated by the Dev Team blog. Most likely they will continue on with redsn0w, OR if the Chronic Team gets geohot's exploit implemented you might see ra!nyday.

I know this could possibly be against forum rules so if you mods want to delete this post, I won't take it personal.
What I did: VMware workstation with os x. Google it. I found an already set-up VM so it made life pretty easy. Also if you have a hard time getting the network driver to work google is your friend. Look for vmware os x driver network and if your on wifi on the host computer set up your wifi card in vmware as it's own vmnet#.
Once os x is online and running download pwnage from the dev-team blog and the 3.1 firmware from another (google is your friend) source. After you've created your IPSW, use a USB drive and in the bottom right of the vmware guest os window click the external drive icon and click connect to guest. Copy your ipsw to USB drive then click the external drive again and click disconnect (connect to host) and voilą. Your new custom ipsw can be used on your pc. Do not confuse your original IPSW with the custom on (it says custom in the filename after it's created.
I know this is a long, tedious process, it is MUCH easier if you know someone with a mac, and is possibly illegal (unless you are a licensed mac owner?) but it is completely possible as I created my custom ipsw last night on a windows 7 laptop running vmware os x, installed it on my 3gs using windows and it works great.
I'm sure this has been mentioned in these forums elsewhere: do not use dfu mode or recovery mode. Simply plug into iTunes with your phone powered on and shift+click restore and select custom ipsw. I used DFU mode and thought I was a goner but I was able to bring it back out of dfu with no problems.
Good luck!

i don't get the difference between pwnagetool and redsn0w..so should i wait for a new version of redsn0w to come out since i'm a windows user? or should i try to jailbreak my phone through someone's mac?

I DL'd the custom ipsw. In spite of what many of the tutorials say, you may not be able to restore in DFU mode. I kept getting 16xx errors and eventually read somewhere to try it in normal or recovery mode. It worked fine. Now to find out how to get service...
Edit: Found something about making sure that the activate box is unchecked if you're a legit AT&T user. I just found an "unactivated" copy of the ipsw and will be trying again with that one. Here's hoping...

Question: I've gotten the impression that posting links to ipsw's is against forum policy. Is it also against policy to post a link to a blog that has links to the ipsw's? I found a blog that has several different 3GS 3.1 custom ipsw's with different options selected from pwnage tool.

I am successfully jailbroken on 3.1 using a DL'd ipsw on Windows XP.

It is IMPORTANT to appreciate that there is a difference between DFU and recovery modes. You must be in DFU mode the first time you do the restore and can be in either DFU or recovery the second time around (will probably default into recovery [e.g., iTunes logo and sync cable].

I understand completely that DFU and Recovery modes are two distinct states. I believe you are referring to the downgrade process from 3.1 to 3.0. If you are currently running 3.0 Jailbroken and try to Restore using a 3.1 custom ipsw, you will likely get a 16xx error during the "preparing iPhone for restore" phase. When this happens, the whole thing stops, and you can reboot the iPhone as if nothing ever happened. I'm pretty sure that nothing DOES happen when the process errors out before actually loading the new ipsw.
SO, yes, you do have to start in DFU for the downgrade process. NO you don't start in DFU for the restore to 3.1 custom ipsw. You can start in Recovery mode or just hook the phone up in regular mode. Either way, iTunes will perform a normal Restore with the custom ipsw, and you are left with a JB'd 3.1 3GS.

Agreed about the DFU/recovery. The hard part is in fact downgrading back to 3.0 where the order of things is important. Once, done, it is a breeze to JB at 3.1

I'll wait to everything is official regarding the JB for windows users.

so what they are saying is that, if you have a 3gs, and updated to 3.1 and lost your jailbreak, then at the moment there still is nothing for you with a stock 3gs?

Kind of... If you are on 3.1 and are able to downgrade via Saurik's server trick, you can JB at 3.1. You just have to downgrade to 3.0 and then Restore with a custom ipsw. If you're not able to downgrade from 3.1, then you're still SOL... Devices that shipped with 3.1 are also SOL so far.

Ok so according to what I just read I can't jailbreak?? Someone please help me quick this is my situation I bought my iPhone about 1 1/2 month ago brand new from the AT&T store and it had 3.0 on it and I never jailbroke the phone. I then updated to 3.1 and still have not ever jailbroke the phone but I would like too. Is there anything I can do to get this thing jailbroke or am I pretty much screwed until they release something?

Correct, you're stuck for the moment. You need to wait until a 3.1 out-of-box jailbreak is released...
