Looks like we might be getting a new Pwnage release today.
From MuscleNerd via Twitter:

Wondering if this next release will offer a downgrade / re-jailbreak option for those on 3GS and 3.1, but with iBEC and iBSS files saved from 3.0.
Ya know for those (cough, like me, cough) who were dumb enough to go to 3.1 ...

I didn't think he was going to go forward with that, is he? I know he didn't have any implementation for his exploit.

[shrug] I'm not the jailbreak guy. I'll do it if someone finds a new exploit, but if not I suppose I'll just live with being stock.

Well, not to brag... but I came up with a way to pretty much guarentee that the Windows jailbrake would be released today!
Was bored yesterday so I took an old hard drive, loaded it up in the laptop and made me a "Hackintosh". Got everything up and running and said to myself "Hey.. why not jailbreak this puppy while I'm running OSX?!? ;)
So I did the jailbreak, swapped out the hard drive back to Vista and synced all my music and stuff and just like that it was done! :ok:ok
Ok, so it was a little bit of a round about way to get there, but what else are ya gonna do with a spare drive and a couple hours of "nothing better to do with your time" on your hands? :dft011:wicked_smile

SUMMARY:
The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.
The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.
DETAILS:
5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.
Ok, so I read the Dev Team's blog and I have a question. I bought my 3Gs yesterday from AT&T and it came pre-installed with 3.01. I have never JBed it. Can I use this pwnage tool and will that take me to 3.1?
Thanks

There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.
I am really cunfused now. I have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS running 3.0.1. I have a 3.0 ECID SSH on File, as says Cydia. What are windows users waiting for the Dev team to release for 3GS? I assume RedSn0w? I'm losted!

Hmm.. I'm (as always) very confused after reading the Dev Team's blog post. Those guys do a terrible job with explaining what works with what and what doesn't..
Anyway. I have a 3GS running 3.1 (stock, obviously) and I did have it jailbroken on 3.0. I've no interest in unlocking. Can I jailbreak?
It seems like such a simple question, yet I couldn't find a clear answer in there.

Yeah, I am in the same boat. Hard to understand their explaination. I have a 3.0 3GS that is J/B (redsn0w). If I upgrade to 3.1 via itunes, can I still J/B using this tool. On their blog they say, you can j/b a 3GS 3.1 phone if you had previous pwned it... but their previous stuff didnt work on 3gs phones...so how would you have previously pwn'ed it.
They also say, if you have a new Out of The Box 3gs, you can not...but what about a phone that was updated to 3.1 (3gs) through itunes that did not have 3.1 stock (OOTB)... jeez... I would like to upgrade to 3.1 via iTunes THEN j/B to make sure I am starting with a fresh phone. Just cant get that answer.
PS - I dont care about unlocking...just J/B

So what's basically being said is that, mac owners with jailbroke 3.0 or 3.0.1 can 'update' to a jailbroken version of 3.1 via the pwnage tool... Right?
I used redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0.1, will that affect me using the pwnage tool?
I've got so many questions... I'm going to bed. I'll catch up in the morning.

As I understand it, you needed to have used the PwnageTool/redsn0w on 3.0 or 3.0.1 to jailbreak your iPhone in order for you to "upgrade" now to the currently pwned 3.1 firmware using PwnageTool.
If you have upgraded to 3.1 via iTunes or if you received a iPhone with 3.1 out-of-box, there is no jailbreak solution for now.

It doesn't matter whether or not you used PwnageTool or redsn0w, as long as you did either of those on 3.0 or 3.0.1 (and are still running your JB'd 3.0 or 3.0.1) you can use the new PwnageTool to do the custom 3.1 ipsw jailbreak.

Add me to the thoroughly confused group. I asked on the dev team post's comments thread, got several replies, and still feel 100% confused.
My 3GS was jaibroken at 3.0.1 stage of things - via purplera1n and then redsn0w. Then I - stupidly - restored to 3.1, having saved off the iBEC and iBSS files prior to going to 3.1. Asked on there whether I could now use this new Pwnage Tool.
Firt got told yes because you're already pwned. So I asked 'really? On a restored to stock 3.1, with no custom .ipsw done prior to the 3.1 restore. Then was told no you need to downgrade to 3.0 before using new tool. So I said my impression was you couldn;t downgrade a 3GS on 3.1. Then I was told in order to downgrade files need to be on Saurik's servers.
So I guess my questions are:
Can those files still be added to Saurik's server now somehow, if I have them on my Mac?
If not, is there another downgrade method that can be used for getting a 3GS on 3.1 back to 3.0?
And others but my brain feels fried like Lincoln's did after seeing Dev Team post.

The files that saurik stored on his server are ECID SHSHs. According to his lengthy post on his website:
"So, many users have gone in and carefully gotten both the iBSS and iBEC files from this personalization mechanism. The iBSS file from this process actually contains no more information than the tiny purplera1nyday file.
However, and this is unfortunate: just because this information is "sufficient to jailbreak", doesn't mean it is convenient. Without someone writing a special jailbreak tool that uses these files as input you are pretty much stuck."
You needed to actually get your ECID SHSHs on file, not the iBSS and iBEC, as I understand it. If you wouldn't have restored to 3.1, you can manually get the ECID and SHSH and set up a "local" server on your computer to do the downgrade, as detailed here: http://modmyi.com/forums/3g-s-downgrading/685331-howto-setup-local-3gs-restore-verification-server-ecid-shsh.html - if you didn't get them on saurik's server.

Thanks Kaba. That was much clearer. Yeah I only saw the stuff about saving anything to Saurik's server when it was too late for me. I had the impression that having saved those two files you had in some way safeguarded your JB for post 3.1 days. Think that still may be the case IF and when somebody brings out a tool to use those - but for now I'm out of luck without having done the Saurik server bit.
Like Dave said above I can cope with being stock for a while - just. Kicking myself (so hard) for ever going to 3.1. But still have faith as always that the Dev Team will eventually bring a solution for those of us in my / Dave's position.

Man, jailbreaking has really become a PITA. I'm stock in 3.0.1 with iBEC, iBSS and ECID files saved while previosly jailbrokeb, but not on Saurik's server. I'll have to jb 3.0.1 then 3.1 but holding off because if something goes wrong, I'll have to restore to 3.1. I'd rather stay on 3.0.1 than risk having to restore.

Well, there is no doubt it's getting harder to get a clean jailbreak. The problem is that people want a jailbreak IMMEDIATELY when Apple releases an update. All of this you see going on how is to get those who waited on the 3.1 update, on the 3.1 update - jailbroken. It's complicated because there is a lot to it.
Once they find a good exploit (which I think the Dev Team has found now) for 3.1, they can release the tool to jailbreak 3.1 out of the box. There is no doubt Apple isn't making it harder, but people are also impatient.

Essentially, your iPhone will "get it" - but you must edit your hosts file to point to saurik's server instead of the Apple Signature Server, explained here: http://www.saurik.com/id/12#howto .
What do you mean an update from iTunes? Like the OS updates, 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, etc.?

As of right now if they are not on saurik's server there is no way to get them on there and there is no other way to down grade as itunes will seek to verify with apple before you restore. From what i understand is that saurik captured more information than we did when we captured our ibec and ibss. I'm fairly new at the whole iPhones scene but this has happened to my wifes iphone also when we first jb. All you have to do is download any other free app from the apple app store and it should work again. You canalsotry a hard reset by pressing both buttons on your phone. It worked for me anyway. I wanted to play with 3.1 so I pwned it and started to play. It seems that as a new release and new jb (as in all other releases) most apps will not function. I wanted to pop this on so others who may want to change know about the compatibility issues. I did expect this to happen but a lot of the apps that I use were not compatible and forced it to safe mode.

Is <removed> down? I was trying to add this source to get appsync for 3.1 but get an error from cydia.

redsn0w was only available for Windows. Its Mac counterpart is PwnageTool.
That's not correct, redsn0w was available on the Mac as well. That's how I successfully jailbroke 3.0 and 3.0.1 on both the 3G and 3GS. It's been on my mac ever since.

Jailbreakers beware, lots of reports of crashing, missing apps, missing carrier logo, no wifi, iphone malfunctions with this new jailbreak. I would wait a little until they have worked out all the kinks but I know some people aren't patient. Anyways, it's all over all the mod forums so be careful out there.

Folks, I upgraded to 3.1 using today's released pwnagetool, so I am jailbroken now but all third party applications (officially bought via appstore) fail to open. The built-in apps work fine (maps, mail, etc.). Cydia opens fine as well. But all other apps (which are legal) fail to open.
Any one having this issue?
I think this is an issue with 3.1 firmware and not the jailbreak. 3rd party apps (legal) wouldn't open. Try downloading another app (free one) and resync. Can also try deleting one of the apps and then redownload and sync. Might fix that problem. Some people had to restore to fix it.
I am not going for jb'ed 3.1 as I don't want this firmware even if I can be jailbroken. Too many issues with apps, battery life, random shutdowns, etc. Think I will just stick to 3.0 jb'ed with purp1erain for now. I am running smooth and I want to stay that way.

End of the road for 3GS owners?
No Windows, No JB if you are not already JB, No hope for those on 3.1 already (which does not include me).
Sad day. Tick Tock.

I tried to JB 3.1 last night but kept getting the 1600 error when attempting to restore. It's a good thing it didn't work with all these issue others were having after the JB worked for them. I guess I'm staying with 3.01 JB for now.

As a jailbroken 3.0 3GS owner who uses Windows, and who has purchased a half dozen Cydia apps, I will say one thing: I'll never buy a jb app ever again. Too risky.

Not the end of the road, but it may take a little while for them to be able to replicate the signing of the 3.1 software for OTB and stock 3.1 phones. The changes to the boot loader and the authentication issue have taken a bit longer to work out. The recent solution that came out was for those who wanted to go to 3.1 but have waited and been vocal about a Jailbreak for 3.1. From following the twitter accounts for the Dev team and the conversations with others they have a way to Jailbreak stock and OTB but there is some more work to do.

What apps are not working for you? I have had a better experience with the J/B apps than the app store apps. The J/B app devs are more likely to provide support than the app store devs.

Why is that?
Why is that? Kinda obvious, no? But I'll bite...
Paying for an app only to not be able to use it the minute I upgrade my iPhone might be a reason. Cryptic comments from the "dev team" that seem to contradict themselves, a feeble jb with only Mac support, relying on my data to be stored on some 3rd party server where it may or may not be, and a general indication that things are not going to get better are others.
And soon the "don't upgrade" thing is gonna be harder and harder. Just a few hours ago I couldn't buy an app from the app store because it was 3.1 only. And having to stay at a certain firmware level is not a viable solution anyway.
So pay for another jb app? Not me, that's FOR SURE.

This problem does not exist any more if setting up the phone as a "new phone". Since I have a handful of apps that store data, I'll probably have to do another restore from backup and figure out how to manually backup the data and then restore it manually. It seems eWallet is easy to do, which is the most important one on my list.

Fair enough. It's all about how you want to use your iPhone. Some people are impatient and don't want to wait for a jailbreak. To each his own. Personally, I don't mind waiting. This whole mess that everyone is in now is because everyone is impatient. These guys are providing this for free and are using their own time outside of school, work, etc.
If everyone would be able to wait until they can develop a 3.1 out-of-box jailbreak, there wouldn't be many problems. You have a few choices:
1. Wait patiently on 3.0 or 3.0.1
2. Use the new PwnageTool
3. Upgrade to 3.1 and be happy with stock until a JB is out
I don't get all the fuss. People except too much too soon from the Dev Team.

I take some offense to the emphasis on "free." I purchased, with real money, a half dozen or so jb apps. Most of that money went to people who are, in fact, the same people who work on jailbreaking itself.
They need to understand that without quickly released jb's, I will not be the only one who will shy away from paying for jb apps again.
What if I do manage to commandeer a Mac and get this funky jb to work? God forbid I need to swap my iPhone out due to a hardware problem. If I got a 3GS with 3.1 stock I'd be hosed.
As others have already noted, the future isn't looking too bright right now. To be frank, I think I'd be crazy to pay for anything jb-related at this point in time. And I have no need for unlocking.

I'm referring to the jailbreak itself. They've NEVER charged you to use software to jailbreak your iPhone. But, like you said, if you're not happy, don't purchase the apps. Simple as that.

I understand where you are coming from. I went back to 3.0 because a significant amount of the jailbreak apps were not compatible and forced the phone into safe mode. I expect that now that this jb has been released some more of the developers may update their apps to be functional with the 3.1. That is the hard thing when it comes to Jail broken apps though. They may not be able to make their app work with a new release until it is jailbroken because the SDK may not allow them access to files and systems that they need. So we have to wait for a jailbreak before we can update and they wait for the jailbreak so that they can update their apps to be functional with the new release. Since they don't have access until a jb is developed it makes the process even longer. I think that in maybe another 2 weeks most of the cydia apps should be updated and functional with 3.1.

Great points.
While I am somewhat frustrated that a couple apps I'd really like on my iPhone from the app store are for 3.1 only, it is more important and beneficial for me to wait patiently because there are more positives being on 3.0.1 jailbroken.
At least that is what I keep telling myself... :dft009:happy
