View Full Version : What should I do? 3GS vs. MyTouch vs. Storm

First of all,
What’s up everyone? :) Everyone have a cup of coffee to start the day?
Now for my question:
My contract with my current provider is up. I will be looking for a new phone, I want the phone to do everything (MP3, TEXT, EMAIL, WEB and GAMES <-- Big plus) I text ALOT, mostly because my wife is a text hog and it’s the only way we talk when we are apart. She uses 3000+ a month...
Now I have used the iPod touch and I loved it, the games are fantastic and and applications are very useful. I have played with a G1 from tmob and I did like the interface and everything else about it but it was slow and it did not do everything I wanted it to (keep in mind this was 6 months ago so I have no clue how the app store is now). I have never used a storm, but people tell me it’s a good phone.
Now I know I'm on an iPhone forum, so the answers will be somewhat biased but I trust people to give me some truth. =P
What should I get? Money is not a problem, I would need two phones and my wife wants the iPhone but I just wanted some opinions from people who have one.
Thank you very much :ok:ok

Are you tied to a specific carrier? All of the phones mentioned are on different carriers.

I ask because I think you should throw the HTC Hero and perhaps the Motorola Cliq in place of the myTouch. While the myTouch is attractive, it's very similar to the G1 (sans keyboard of course). The Hero offers HTC's Sense UI and the reviews have been somewhat positive. Only drawbacks have the device being a bit sluggish. See HTC Hero vs myTouch (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/07/08/htc-hero-vs-t-mobile-mytouch-3g-fight/) fight.
I would not get the Storm (see my BlackBerry Storm review (http://www.everythingberry.com/articles/2008/12/1/blackberry-storm-review/)).
I haven't used the Hero yet, so I'd advise you to read Engadget's Hero review (http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/htc-hero-review/).
I'm not a fan of the browser on the Android phones. It's not terrible, but simply not on par with the iPhone or the Palm Pre (http://www.everythingpre.com).
Based on apps (and quality apps), I'd advise iPhone 3GS over the Hero.

Here's a pretty big thread comparing the Storm vs iPhone (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/general-discussion/dont-believe-the-lies-bb-storm-vs-iphone-39515.html).
My thumbs still hurt from using the Storm.
BTW, the Storm 2 is coming in the next few months. No official date that I've seen, but it's soon based upon what I've seen on various sites.

I agree with the G1 browser, I hated it. The G1 is sluggish and slow, I think the Android OS has a way to go to be at par with Apple. The only thing keeping me attracted to the Android OS is the future of it, But I could always change later.
Another huge plus is compatibility with Novell, the iPhone and the BB both have Notifylink applications. The place I work is moving all of our older PDA's to the iPod Touch, I wont get one but I will support them. So it would be nice to have something I can learn the OS/Apps on. We also support BB, but It looks like apple will be a huge part of my future. So I think the iPhone would be the best bet...But I still need to look at some BB phones. AT&T is not the best provider of service, thats the main thing holding me back from the iPhone. (Yes, I know about unlocking and such...don't care much to do that)
..Oh and plus the whole wife wanting an iPhone...thing..can't tell her no...

I agree with Chris. You should definitely take the Storm out of the picture. RIM rushed that phone out to the competition and did not do a very good job with it. As far as AT&T, it looks like the iPhone will be with them for a while. So, if you're not happy with AT&T's service you can unlock and use with T-Mobile, which is worse service than AT&T, IMO.
My vote would be the iPhone + world of jailbreak.

Good news,
After much input from people at work and home, I have ordered the iPhone.
I just ordered:
1 x 32gb 3gs black (for me)
1 x 16gb 3gs white (wife)
And...because Chris helped me out I'll buy some cases from the store. (Let’s hope you have pink...not for me...)
I also get a 15% discount for service with ATT because of my work...So Its all good.
@KabaModern - I "was" with t-mobile and the 3g service was in and out a lot, but I managed with it. I know I said I won’t mess with jailbreaking the iPhone but knowing me It will be in the first week.
@Chris - Thanks for the info, You know man I just don’t like the pre at all. A co-worker of mine has one, and I just hate it. I don't mind the OS, I just don't like the phone.
So I guess you will be seeing more of me around, can’t wait to spend 200 bucks in iTunes...oh joy... …
This is the first question of many I will have:
Should I buy MobileMe? Just wondering if its worth it.
Thanks again!

Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on your purchase of your iPhone! As far as MobileMe, I don't use it so I cannot comment on it - but if you do have any questions with jailbreaking, etc. please post them in the iPhone Modifications forum. I lurk around here very often, as do a lot of other who can provide assistance to you.

MobileMe is very nice for keepng your info on multiple devices synced together - email, contacts, calendar, etc. To really take advantage of it, you'll need either a mac, or a PC with Outlook 2007.
There are also some nice features that allow you to track your iPhone via gps, send an SMS alert, or remotely wipe it in case is is lost or stolen.
I would at least do the 60-day trial you get with your iPhone.
Google also has google sync and push email for free now, so if you have a gmail account, that's another option

Congrats on the 3GS purchases, you chose wisely :)
The iPhone 3GS. Simply the best. My favorite gadget ever.
The G1 myTouch ties with 2 other phones for the highest SAR (radiation) levels of any phone on Earth. It's open source, but you still have to root it to add certain apps. Google isn't as bad as Apple, but they are still restrictive.
The Storm was a failure. I know three people that have a Storm, and the only thing any of them like about it is the fact that they can stay with Verizon. All of them are forced to remove the battery to reset at least every few days due to lock ups.

@acosmichippo - Ya, the main reason I would want MobileMe is for the security features. I don't use outlook.
@Europa - I know the Android OS is open source, but It still does not live up to the Apple OS in my book. Also, If the MyTouch is anything like the G1 you will have lag with everything...I was using a friends and I opened the browser and it lagged when I was typing in a URL. (nothing was loading...I killed all the apps running with Taskiller)... I also just hate the browser, like chris said its not on par with the iPhones. (And the opera browser for it also sucks...)
I think the iphone was a good choice, I made my wife happy and got a cool phone.
What more could you want? :ok:ok

+1 MobilMe. I couldn't imagine having an iPhone without it.
I agree with you about Android.

I've used a G1 and a Storm. They don't compare to an iPhone. I'm so glad I switched. The browser is amazing. And the reponsiveness if the touchscreen can't be beat. Your best bet would be to go to the individual stores and play around with the devices. Only you know what fits you best.

Already got the iPhone :ok:ok

I look cool with an iPhone :dft003:coolkid *Cough*

The Storm sells for much cheaper in Egypt than the iPhones. I am serious. It's the same price as a 2G 16GB iPhone here. And uh, the Storm doesn't even sell and that's why it's so cheap lol. People just love Wi-Fi and Apple, for some reason :dft011:wicked_smile
