First: I was able to get MMS working on my 3G[S] using my Windows XP machine at the office a couple weeks ago. Now I am trying from home for another iPhone.

I have seen the issues with the DOS cmd not working for various reasons, but it is executing fine for me- at least there is no error.
I then Plug in the iPhone, Start iTunes, click on the iPhone in the device listing in iTunes, I then Shift-click the "Update" button.

Results: iTunes only gives me the option to upgrade to 3.1. It does not give the option to select a file type or anything else.

Home setup: iTunes 9.0
iPhone OS: 3.0.01
iPhone model: 3G

Searched high and low - could not find anyone who's shift-click was locked into the 3.1 upgrade.

Am I missing something?

You need to type "cmd" in the run box in your Start menu and enable that ability in iTunes:

Windows 2000/XP/Vista (32-bit):
Go to Start -> Run
type in “command” and hit enter
Type/copy+paste this into the command console that comes up: “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
Hit enter

Yes sir - did that.
Executed cmd.exe and command.com.
Even tried ASR's download at http://myurlz.com/mms1 -

Tried navigating to C:\Program Files\iTunes and running "iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

All with same results...for some reason the invocation of iTunes is not acknowledging the /set command, even though it is executing...

So you already did the procedure exactly as described in my post? With the quotes?

I can't understand why it's not working for you. You're not running 64-bit software, are you?

Yes - the command gets an error without the quotes. Very strange. My PC is 32 bit.

My iTunes home is C:\Program Files\iTunes

Moved from my Gateway to my young daughter's eMachine and it works fine.
Oh well - I hate hard to nail down issues...

Finally figured it out: there was an iTunes process running in the background - forgot the exact name and path, but it was one of those updater/background things. I found it while cleaning up rogue startups and running processes on my PC. After I killed the iTunes process, tried the shift-update again and it worked. So not only do you need to exit iTunes, you need to terminate all iTunes processes...
