So today is the day that most mms deprived iPhone owners have been waiting for. I say most of us because those of you with 1st gen iPhones are SOL! So where is this update? Anybody seen it yet this morning? Think it will be a progressive upgrade coast to coast? Think att is ready for onslaught of mms traffic?

I'm off work today so I'll be here often to observe what could be a very chaotic day for AT&T it's users today. I know, not very entertaining. Share your thoughts, opinions, and experiences with the update and network traffic throughout the day.

No, there will be a carrier update in iTunes. It will be a pop up box similar to the firmware updates box, but it look like the below image. It will be a small file that you install the same as a FW update.

I'm trying to send out MMS's... they're going through but no one seems to be getting them yet. Here's a weird thing though: I have 3G off because I'm home on WIFI and trying to save battery. I just sent an MMS and I clearly heard it going over Edge via my speakers (GSM interference).

Why would the phone choose to send an MMS over Edge when I was on WIFI? Do all MMS's have to use the cellular network to transmit? If so, that's very bad news for AT&T's network...

Yeah all mms's go over the network since it usually goes out with an sms attached as well. If they could go out over wifi we probably would have had that functionality since 3.0 day one. That is why the people are questioning whether or not at&t will be able to handle all the traffic when the floodgates open.

Works here in NJ, went from carrier 5.0 to 5.5! If you're not on 3G network, it will take a while to send.

The lamest part about this is that I have to wait until my friends and family with iPhones get this update after they get home from work today (including my husband). So far I can only MMS my friends who don't have iPhones and they're already sick of pictures of my dog sleeping next to my desk.

It's just a carrier update. It installed in like 5 seconds. All I had to do was restart my 3GS and MMS was working. The carrier file went from 5.0 to 5.5. Hope this helps some of you ;)

Have you tried leaving the phone 'off' for a few minutes? Also, I'd probably try calling AT&T as well to ensure they have your iphone account set up correctly.

It's too early to tell if your account setup is an issue or not but try it anyway.

Did you reboot your iPhone?

You do have 3.1.. probably been had it, if you updated to it last week...

check in your settings, to see if your carrier settings have changed..

I noticed that my iTunes wasn't in the regular Program Files older but in the Program Files (x86) folder but wasn't leaving the space between Files and (x86). Your link helped. Thanks.

Anyone notice serious improvement in battery life? Since the 5.5 update, my phone has only dropped 1% in two hours with a ton of MMS'ing and about 5 or 6 phone calls!:ok:ok Maybe it's just coincidence but I never got through 2 hrs and only 1% drain on the battery!

Just noticed a little bug. Maybe someone can confirm the same occurrance. If I send a MMS to multiple recipients, the TXT screen does not show the picture i sent but a gray box with content:=type text/plain etc.

If I send the MMS to one recipient, then the picture stays in the TXT thread for that person.

Good thing I read the entire thread on that other forum. Apparently it kills the BenM.at profile so you lose tethering? I think I'll wait a little longer, in my case Tethering is a must while MMS is nice to have.

Good thing I read the entire thread on that other forum. Apparently it kills the BenM.at profile so you lose tethering? I think I'll wait a little longer, in my case Tethering is a must while MMS is nice to have.

Just noticed a little bug. Maybe someone can confirm the same occurrance. If I send a MMS to multiple recipients, the TXT screen does not show the picture i sent but a gray box with content:=type text/plain etc.

If I send the MMS to one recipient, then the picture stays in the TXT thread for that person.

Anyone notice serious improvement in battery life? Since the 5.5 update, my phone has only dropped 1% in two hours with a ton of MMS'ing and about 5 or 6 phone calls!:ok:ok Maybe it's just coincidence but I never got through 2 hrs and only 1% drain on the battery!

That happens all the time with me since 3.0.... battery will drain quickly to around 50% then hover there for hours.

I can almost guarantee that this carrier file update does nothing for battery life.

See, I only just tried tethering after getting MMS for the first time last night. I seem to have lost USB tethering but BlueTooth tethering is working fine. I updated the carrier to 5.0 a couple weeks ago and restarted the phone and MMS worked instantly. I didn't have to do anything different to get tethering to work last night.

You won't hear 3G interference on amplified speakers like you do with Edge... it's out of the audible range.

The iPhone will use either 3G or Edge if you have 3G off to send MMS. They do not transmit over WIFI. You probably understand this, but I want to make it clear for everyone else.

I'm pretty sure it does in fact use EDGE. I am the only one in my family that uses data but every month my other family members have erroneous data charges that are accrued by sending and receiving MMS. It's never over 1 MB but they are definitely present.

I initially did the BenM tethering hack a while ago when it was first introduced. I never had solid MMS working. 2 weeks ago I decided to give MMS another try. I went and located the 5.0ipcc file from AT&T and did the Terminal command to enable carrier updates. From there I just updated the carrier to 5.0 in iTunes and restarted the phone, and the MMS icon appeared and it's worked ever since.

I didn't even think to check if my tethering was working until last night when reading your posts actually about the possibility of losing it. I tried USB and it didn't work so I tried BT and it did. I didn't do the BenM thing again nor did I try to change any settings.

I say that it's worth trying again. If it DOES disable MMS you can always redo the steps you took to get MMS I suppose.

Ever since I got the MMS working everything has sent as "2 messages". I have unlimited texts so I can't really notice if it counts as 2 or not. Do you have a limit on your plan? If so, call the *3282# and get a count of your texts. Then try sending an MMS and redo the *3282# and see if it counted as 2. It might work?

No, really, I have no clue. I would do redo the BenM.at thing. If you lose MMS then redo everything again. The article has a link to download carrier 4.0 so if all goes bad just start all over again and get it back to how you originally had it.

All I did was follow the directions on that link then turned my phone off then on and everything was working.

If you hit edit, there is only one radio button toggle per message, so I think you can rest easy...

do you have an earlier backup of your phone, like b4 you did the hacked setting... try restoring back to a version BEFORE you tried hacking... and then hit up iTunes again... it should roll you through again, with the fresh settings..

Anyway, I had MMS working with the carrier file update from a week or two ago. I just updated to 5.5 and have now lost my Cellular Data Network Settings. They've inexplicably disappeared completely.

I sent a friend an MMS which he received and had him send me something back but all I got back was a text that said <<slide show>> wth?

I even went back to carrier file 5.0, restarted and reinstalled 5.5. to no avail. It shows I've got 5.5 installed but no option under Settings>General>Network for Cellular Data Network Settings. I'm sending MMS fine but not receiving them.

Has this happened to anyone else today? I really don't want to go through a restore at this point so I'm going to wait it out and see if anyone else reports this issue.

OK I admittedly didn't read through the previous 3 pages that have been generated since I left my home this morning so if this has been covered forgive me and get over it. ;)

Anyway, I had MMS working with the carrier file update from a week or two ago. I just updated to 5.5 and have now lost my Cellular Data Network Settings. They've inexplicably disappeared completely.

I sent a friend an MMS which he received and had him send me something back but all I got back was a text that said <<slide show>> wth?

I even went back to carrier file 5.0, restarted and reinstalled 5.5. to no avail. It shows I've got 5.5 installed but no option under Settings>General>Network for Cellular Data Network Settings. I'm sending MMS fine but not receiving them.

Has this happened to anyone else today? I really don't want to go through a restore at this point so I'm going to wait it out and see if anyone else reports this issue.

No, no AirPlane Mode.. that kills your communication with the towers..

WiFi enables internet... not the PHONE settings...

in AirPlane Mode, you can't do ANYTHING tower related.. make calls, texts, etc...

Yeah, I think I'm going to just go back to the 5.1 carrier file, since it works for me, until a solution to get MMS working with 5.5 AND retain my cellular data settings options is found without having to restore.

Give me just a minute and I should be able to verify that incoming MMS works. So far I have verified tethering and outgoing MMS. I just texted a friend and asked her to send me an MMS.

in such a rush to beat the system.. couldn't wait 6-10 more days..

best they can hope to do is restore to a backup they had BEFORE they put the hacked carrier on their phone... and then get today's setting on that fresh system..

unless someone modifies today's carrier update to fix the old broken one...

Yep, I just verified that outgoing and incoming MMS work as well as tethering :)

Weird. My mother got a text on her Razr informing her that MMS was available today for the iPhone. She's never had an iPhone.

Hmm? I just noticed that some forums are using Carrier 5.5 while the link I used is Carrier 5.0 !

The one I used says that it will also give tethering without even mentioning the BenN.at mod. I guess I just got lucky?

I have NON-JB'd 3.0.1 and it went smoothly and it's all working.

Go to the beginning of this thread and read all of it and you'll see what you can do and if you run into trouble you'll get ideas on how to fix it.
