Correcting an Apple online store listing from earlier Thursday, TomTom U.K. announced that the iPhone car kit accessory will have a retail price of £99.99 but will not include the TomTom application.

"TomTom announces today that the TomTom car kit for the iPhone will have a recommended retail price of £99.99," the company said in a press release. "The TomTom car kit will be available this October and will be sold separately from the TomTom app. It will be compatible with the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS. All further details on the car kit will be made available soon."

That conflicts with earlier reports that the kit would include the software as a bundle. It also disputes the Apple Store page, which was listed for a short time Thursday, that explicitly stated the TomTom application would be part of the package.

Not stated in the press release is whether the iPod touch will be compatible with the hardware kit. The windshield mount includes an external GPS receiver that is said to improve the reception of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Unlike those models, first-generation iPhone does not include an internal GPS receiver, but the press release states that the device will work with the hardware. That corrects an apparent error in the previous Apple Store listing, which said that the TomTom software would not work on the first-generation iPhone.

Originally due for release over the summer, the kit was delayed (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/03/tomtom_kit_delayed_apple_store_robbery_time_capsul e_troubles.html) until October. The TomTom application was released in the App Store in August (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/08/17/tomtom_for_apple_iphone_released_in_u_s_app_store_ for_99.html) at a price of $99 U.S. No U.S. price for the hardware kit has been made available.

This product overall is too expensive. Buy a hand held unit for much less.

The upside to the docking station is all the features are built into one...and you just slip the phone in and out of the dock rather than pushing it into a dock and then connecting 1 or 2 wires...if it works with the case on the phone I'll buy it...still not sure if I'll get Navigon or TomTom for the GPS app though

Not if your phone is already in a case

How do you know that it won't work with phones in a case?

Apparently you haven't seen the pictures of the device. I can pretty much guarantee that it will not accept a phone in a case. Maybe a skin, but that would be the extent of it.

Tomtoms arrogance baffles me. They had the upper hand when 3.0 was announced. At that time everyone was anticipating their product. Apparently they do not realise that the competition has surpassed them. One would have thought that the first release of the software would have text to speech, just to impose it's superiority over the others. Good brand name recognition can only go so far.

I totally agree - I think TomTom is way off the mark here. Many of the other GPS apps out there have already surpassed TomTom's in terms of features and this ridiculously-priced cradle is just too much. What on earth are they thinking? Do they even realize how all of this comes across to potential customers? If this cradle came with a promo code to download the app at no cost, it would be one thing, but to pay $200 for the app and the cradle is just complete and utter nonsense.

I completely concur, however I'd still venture that there will be those willing to fork over the dough. People don't always make the most financially sound decisions.

Maybe they don't care if it isn't a big hit. Their standalone market may be more profitable and the iPhone is just not that important. Maybe they are testing the market (and relying on brand loyalty) and will reduce the price later if sales are weak at the current price. There has to be some kind of logic for setting this price. Right?
