View Full Version : Podium....Yes, I bought one..
Yes, it's true, I threw down the dough for a "Platinum Podium" stand for my desk here at work. I saved a bit of money though, and I'll get to that in a minute.
I just wanted to let anyone who was looking at getting a desk stand to know that I have spent months looking for the right one. I wanted one that works with my slider case, but the only one that does is a version of the Ped3, and I don't like that thing at all. (apparently neither do a lot of reviewers)
So, after debating and searching and researching and more debating, I finally decided to get a podium.
Of all the reviews I have read, the only thing negative any of them have ever talked about was the price. Yeah, it's friggin' steep as hell for a stand, but is awesome as far as design and functionality.
Now, to help reduce the steep-ness of the price, you can save 20% by using coupon code " revolution ". That makes it about the same price as a new case and set of screen protectors, and that's how I am going to keep looking at it so I can feel justified about the purchase till it arrives.
When it gets here, I will do a review and post pics.

Here is the address to their main page.

I ordered the Platinum version, which is the most expensive, but shiny silver goes with everything. My next choice was the peal finish ( I have a white I phone), which is about 10 bucks cheaper before the discount.
Make sure that if you order one to use that coupon code " revolution " to save yourself 20% off.
I paid for the 2 day fedex shipping and have it coming to my office, since this is where I am going to use it.
btw, I ordered it around 10AM eastern, and just got the email that it shipped at 1:30pm. Fast in-house turn around time!

Here's a link to a YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R7XrIieVgY) review of the product. Looks cool but I'm not ready to spend $60+ for one ... yet :D
YMMV
Hmmm? Well, maybe at $48 .... but I still thinking that taking the phone out of my case to use it is kind of a deal killer for me for now.

Thanks Hawk, I just ordered the platinum. The discount code worked and saved me $11.60 :)
MrMike, it's $53.95 with the discount including shipping.

Yes, This was my dilemma too, but since no one makes a decent stand (especially with the functionality like the podium) that accepts a iPhone in a case (except the Ped 3, and again, I don't like it, and it didn't get very good reviews from what I have read), this is the only choice - in my opinion.
I had contacted them once about whether or not they are going to make a stand that supports iPhones in a case and they said it was something that they are working on, so who knows? Maybe they will come out with an upgrade that allows you to replace the head piece with an updated one.

yeah, if I were married, I'd probably never hear the end of it, but I am not, so I bought it! I also bought the IMP500 5000mah external backup battery after reading Napoleon's review of it. I have a 5.5 hour flight coming up, and will need that battery to play my movies!

I'd get one of these if it were a charger as well... Good concept, but without charging I don't think I'd use it over my dock.
I agree that having an actual dock on it would be one of the top 2 things that every desk stand needs, but it is setup to have a charging cord pass through the oval hole to plug into the phone.
Still, for as sturdy and stylish as it is, the functionality of viewing positions is the biggest selling point. There isn't anything else on the market that can position itself like this can.
There will be a review coming as soon as it gets here.

I've been looking at this for quite some time and I liked them but I wished they made it in Black and I wished that I could put the phone with the case on it in this thing. Well, both of my wishes were granted. The holder comes in a Dark Carbon color and with a self asjustment, I can get my iPhone with the Slider on it in there.
Awesome!

ROFLMAO!! OMG!! I AM SO SORRY! I have been up since 2:30am and I am no good. Now, I'm at work too. Yeah, a real productive day I'm going to have!
I meant to say that if I could make an adjustment to the holder to get my slider in then it would be perfect. I should have said all that instead of saying it had a self adjustment.
My Bad! I'm sorry. I hope there is a way to adjust it to hold the iphone with a case in it.
I am sooo sleepy.

Nice. How tight is it? Do you think it might work with a thin Moshi iGlaze case on? If not, does that part that I circled look like it would be modifiable?
Mine is in Portand right now and won't be here until the 29th.

It's pretty tight and at the same time, just a slight twist as you gently lift on the phone and it comes right out. (took me a minute to learn that :p) If you try to pull it straight out, it's very tough to do.
As far as modifying it...the clips might be a separate piece, but they are molded onto the frame, so they don't come off- not without cutting, and I haven't seen a way that it can be done so it can be reused.
Of course I am at work and cannot work on it till I get home, but for now, Modification is a "no-go".
Review tonight.

Does it look like there is metal attaching this piece, or just plastic? I know I'll have to cut it, but if it's just plastic, it will be a lot easier. I might also just be able to heat it and stretch it a little if it's just plastic. I'm only going to need it to be a few millimeters wider to work with the iGlaze.

The interior is of course the same width as the iPhone, the exterior is slightly wider than my slider case. When I say the "clip" is molded on, the part it's mounted to has 3 holes in it and the clip is apparently melted to pass through those holes, so heating it up will not allow it to simply slide off. The clip actually looks like it's part of the frame it's so tight.
The other problem is that the clips are molded to hold the edge of the iPhone. They are not as wide as a case, so even if you were able to remove it and get the right width between them, there is still a chance it won't fit your case. You'll have to look it over. I'm not saying it impossible, just that the chances of botching it are very large.
Now that I've been using it, I kind of like it without my case.

Things of such beauty such as the iPhone and the Podium weren't made for cases. It looks marvelous in its naked glory on that artfully designed stand.
I agree, but I don't go outside without a case (or anywhere with a hard ground surface). At this point I don't mind taking it off to place the phone in the podium.

I quit using cases about six months ago or so and although it may not be the wisest decision I've made it sure is a satisfying one. There's nothing that feels quite like the naked iPhone in your hand. One day I'll likely have to pay for my decision to go caseless but, fortunately, I can always cough up the dough for a replacement. It's a high risk that delivers a higher reward in my eye.

I agree completely. But so far I have not been brave enough to go naked with the plastic 3GS casing. My v1, on the other hand, took quite a beating - and still does. I loved that thing.

Thanks hippo! It does take a fair amount of courage to take the leap to do the iPhone streak. lol
I was infamous for dropping my phone and being less than careful with it when I used cases. I now treat it much more gingerly these days. Although I'll still occasionally find myself in situations where with one wrong move I'll instantly be regretting not having any protection.
Just today, for example, I was distracted when I got out of my truck. Generally, I'll instantly tuck it away in my front pocket before exiting. I had a handful of other things to grab as well and I didn't properly plan my exit. I walked up the sidewalk to my home with my phone in one hand, headphones attached to phone and my ears, and the other hand held my keys and a couple of shopping bags.
It was not until I got to the front door to unlock it that I realized my phone was in my hand and I had too many items in my other hand for my phone to be safe. One wrong move could have sent it flying to the pavement.
Honestly, using it naked has made me more responsible with it.

I have the Ped3 form and it has been great. I use several types of cases and don't want to have to take it out of the case. So if you use cases other than the Moshi this may be an option plus it's made in the good old US of A. It's on sale for $36.I have one at my office and am getting one for home.

I don't have a casecrown. Just an FYI, the cases do slightly stretch the plastic on the Podium holder so it won't work with a naked phone after using it with a cased phone. I put my iGlazed cased iPhone in it everyday, and it's still fits snug.
Ok, this morning I had something very disheartening happen with my podium. It has gotten loose and will not stay in certain positions. I have sent an message through the Podium website, and I'm waiting to see what they say.

What lawsuit?
What lawsuit?
Well, you know Apple... They were suing over the name Podium because it's a stand for an iPhone or an iPod. Since it's made for those devices, and Podium has Pod in the name, Apple issued a cease and desist to the folks at Pivatol when the podium first came out.
Obviously this didn't stop production, because they came out with 2 more, the Pearl and Carbon. But either they have a very high demand for the Platinum, or somehow Apple actually got them to stop production, allowing them to just sell off the remaining stock.
That would attribute to the Platinum being out of stock, and the much lower price point for the other 2 versions.
Personally, I think Apple can suck it on this one. I mean how many frivolous lawsuits do they need to have going on at one time? Is this just their legal department justifying the salaries of some of their lawyers?
