I got my wifes phone to JB and did a backup in iTunes first. She had never synced or backed up before so I just installed iTunes and did a backup on her computer.
Then i ran Purplera1n and it immediately crashed the app and the phone went into restore more and iTunes wants to restore it now saying that it will erase everything and install the latest 3.1 fw which I will then NOT be able to JB.

What can I do? I did not do a SYNC just a backup. Will all the data media/pictures/contacts be lost? Can I restore to 3.0 somehow and still keep her pictures etc? I figured that was what the backup was for, but it says that everything will be erased, and then synced.

Please help.
Richard

You can update to 3.1 and jailbreak if you have a Mac. By the looks of your screenshot, though, you're on Windows. Anyway, I can point you to a very good and detailed tutorial on how to jailbreak with 3.0.x software; however, I need your iPhone model... 2G, 3G or 3G[S]...?

The media is in iTunes, it can just be synced backed on after restoring to factory settings.
The pictures are on your computer right?

Always back up your contacts outside of iTunes, especially if you jailbreak. You need to restore to factory settings each time you rejailbreak, which is each time you do an Apple Update. They can be backed up in an email account, such as Google Gmail or Yahoo for free. There is a tab for syncing them through this email account in iTunes. Never rely on the iTunes backups for your contacts, even if you never jailbreak. It's too risky. The computers hard drive may crash, the backups may be corrupt etc.

If your phone is a V1 or 3G, you can restore it to 3.0.1 or 3.0, but you won't be able to if it's a 3GS unless you uploaded your ECID to Saurik's server. Download the 3.0.1 IPSW and shift+restore (option+restore Mac).

The backups are great for none jailbroken phones, but once you jailbreak, you shouldn't use them anymore. The backups will have traces of the jailbreaks and can cause potential problems.

Since the phone is jailbroken right now, you will need to restore to factory settings, unless you can go in and delete the latest back up (if the one prior to that was a stock backup).

its a 3gs on 3.0 and I want to keep it on 3.0. So whats in the backup and why do it? I did not have it sync any data like email or pictures, but I did take a backup. Is there any way to restore to the backup i just did? Whats the point if I cant?
Also, why would it go into DFU when doing the JB?

Also, it looks like I can dl the 3.0 FW and click shift then restore to select the DL 3.0 FW.
Is there ANY WAY i can save my wifes photos if they were not synced BUT backed up? We have precious videos and pictures of our babies on there.
Please help....what should i do?

Because backups save you tons of time. They save your settings, notes, contacts, pics, etc. They work great. Unfortunately, they can't (shouldn't) be used after jailbreaking. This is the main drawback to jailbreaking.

Unfortunately, since it's a 3GS, you can't restore to anything except 3.1 right now. Did you save your ECID, upload it to Saurik through Cydia, or save your iBEC or iBSS? What I recommend you do, is just set the phone aside and not use it. You can take the SIM card out and use it in a differnt AT&T phone for the time being. Hopefully, the Dev Team will have the 3.1 JB released soon.

I'm not sure what you are asking for as far as why it would go into DFU mode. Please elaborate.

JB is the least of my worries now really. I just want a working phone back with the pictures we had on there. Is this possible since i did take a backup (no sync)? Also, it looks like I can click shift and restore to a selectable FW so it doesnt automatically update to 3.0.
Lastly, I was simply asking why did it go into DFU mode when jailbreaking and completely hose the phone. Ive done this several times with my 3GS with no issues at all.

If it's a 3GS, the shift restore to 3.0 will fail. You can restore to 3.1, possibly losing the option to unlock forever, restore from backup, get the pictures and videos off the phone, and then restore to factory settings later. It's not a requirement to restore to factory settings, it's just recommended. The other option is to wait it out a little bit longer like I said above.

DFU mode is required to jailbreak. It wasn't DFU mode itself that caused it to fail. It's happened to me multiple times. I isolated the problem to the USB cable (3G cable with a 3GS phone...the 3GS is very picky), but there many possible reasons for it to fail.

Since you are prioritizing it that way and can't wait, restore it to 3.1 from backup. Shift restore to 3.0 will fail. Apple is blocking requests for old firmware in iTunes on the 3GS. After getting your pics/videos off the phone and syncing your contacts to an email account, I recommend restoring again, but this time to factory settings which will require setting the phone up from scratch.
