I have a phone that has 2.2.1 software, but I want to update it to 3.0 or 3.1 and jailbreak and unlock it. is this possible? I am not sure if 3.1 can be jailbroken yet and if not, I would have to go to 3.0, but I'm not sure how to get it to 3.0 and not have to go to 3.1. Thanks a lot

PC or Mac? V1 or 3G? What browser do you use? Do you need/want tethering? Are you using T-Mobile?

PC, 3G, I use Firefox, I don't need or want tethering. It won't be used on T-Mobile, but not sure what carrier. Thanks a lot

Are you selling it? Do you have a non AT&T SIM to verify the unlock?
Since you don't have a Mac, you won't be able to jailbreak it on 3.1, so I recommend updating to 3.0.1 and jailbreaking with redsn0w and then unlocking with ultrasn0w.
In iTunes, you'll need to hit shift+restore instead of restore, hitting restore would update you to 3.1. Before restoring, download the 3.0.1 IPSW. Also download the 3.0 IPSW. iTunes needs the 3.0.1 and redsn0w needs the 3.0. Download and run redsn0w. After that, install ultrasn0w in Cydia and you'll be unlocked and running 3.0.1.

He may be able to jailbreak it on his PC by obtaining a custom firmware that is already jailbroken and unlocked.
