Let me know if it works! It seems complicated, and Im afraid to screw it up. Dont you think Apple will eventually change this so we will be able to add our own ringtones???

I did it, it worked but now when I plug phone in, Im getting this message in Itunes....
The software required for iPhone is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again.
Should I do that?

Hmm, I don't get the very first step. I tried it, and my iphone just said to connect to itunes and itunes shut down... so I had to restore my iPhone... -_-
ugh, and I have the PERFECT song I want too... lmao.

Basically, you have to get the firmware to download...so you pretend you are going to download and install, but instead you just download it.
Can anyone help with my problems, I wanna keep my custom ringtones, but I want to be able to sync as well :foot:.

Also is there a way to get rid of them if you want to remove them. I'm sure both of my questions invlolve doing something in the cmd prompt but I don't know what. I tried uninstalling and re-installing itunes and im getting the same message which is making me nervous because now my iPhone is not even being recognized by itunes, (though it is with windows).
I would really appreciate any help with this.

I'm glad it's working for some of you. For me, personally I think it's playing Russian Roulette with a $500 or $600 phone. I can see how this is worth it if custom ringtones were never going to be an option for iPhone, but seeing how iTunes is going to have it's own ringtone support for iPhone (risk free!), I'd say it's alot wiser to wait for it. The iPhone is a brilliant device and definitely not something for amateurs to be fiddling with. If you know what you're doing, balls in your court. As for me, I'm not taking any chances. I love my iPhone too much! :)

yeah, I was hesitant at first but saw that it worked for the people who tried it.
I personally dont think that such easy steps can brick your iPhone but hey, you never know...
Now I love my iPhone even more!

I saw no feasible way to "BRICK" your phone. That is just put in there just on the off chance someone actually manages too.

You can sync. You just cant update/restore. Well you CAN update or restore but you lose your ringtones.

That's what I'm saying, there really isn't a risk here. You have a one year warranty on your phone and you don't need to tell Apple all of the reasons as to "why" it stopped working, you can just play dumb and get a replacement.

I'm not so sure that they won't be able to know. It just depends on whether they'll take the time to look hard enough. If enough phones start coming in with software problems, I'm sure they'll be able to track it back.

As I said they just put that in as a warning. ANYTHING I mean ANYTHING done to something COULD brick it. The chances are just so low that you don't even think about it.

Yes, I've read forums where people actually use the iPhone ringers, but make them louder in programs, like Adobe Audition, or Garage Band, so on...

The iPhone accepts mp3s even though it isn't stated on the walkthrough. If you want to edit songs I've been using an open source program called Audacity. Here is the link;

Good Luck!

Is it possible to just set a full mp3 as a ringtone? Or do they have to be 20 - 30 second clips, like on other phones?

The can be the full song (I'm pretty sure) but your phone only rings for what... 30 seconds?
so minus well get the best 30 seconds out of that song! :laugh2:

just becareful when you increase the volume on any ringtone.... The speaker is soooi tiny and bass is already muddy through it...
I would edit the bass out if your gonna create a louder ringtone.... Just so you dont take a risk in blowing the speaker

okay, I had troubles with this too...
What I found out was that what it wants you to download is the software package... so you know usually before you restore your iPhone, it downloads something... it wants you to download that and once it's download take off your iphone.
your iPhone should be working fine when you take it off.

Ok I'm not sure if I really understood that....you said just leave it on during the restore process untill it mentions applying it to the phone? I've already gone too far and ended up erasing everything (no big deal its saved). I guess I'll try again...

I'm having a problem maybe someone can help me with. Ive got the new ringtones on my phone but not all of them show up in the list when I try to assign ringtones to a specific contact. Is there a separate directory where the phone stores the ringtones in the "assign to contact" list?
heespharm

odd maybe its too big a file( too long of a song ) to use as a contact ringtone
Another thing that maybe important is to reduce the file name length and keep it to simple characters

Dont think either of those is the problem. Ive got other ringtones that are longer and have longer filenames that do show up. Is there a limit to how many ringtones will show up in the "assign to contact" list perhaps?

Ok, so I'm at the command prompt window, but it's telling me that jailbreak is not an operable program or batch file.
Just to make sure I'm doing it right, I hit enter after each command? Or do I type in each command all together? I'm not too savy on this kind of stuff, sorry lol

I have a problem: I tried this a few times and it didn't work. The first few times i did it i was able to start the downloading in Itunes after starting restore and unpluging my iphone. But as soon as the download finished i would get an error message (cant remember what it said, didn't pay much attention to it at the time). Now when i try to restore the download does not start up....The phone just restores (even if i plug it out after hitting restore the download wont start up)
Can anyone help me?

You don't want to restore, You just want itunes to download that file. Once it has downloaded continue on with the tutorial.

im from piscataway, in middlesex county. Near New Brunswick and plainfield.
you do the command rmdir in place of putfile. And you type out the whole string up to xxx.m4a where xxx.m4a is your title.

All the other ringtones show in in the contacts section just this last one i added didn't show up and i did everything exactly the same.
wjp09
07-16-2007, 02:57 AM
That is strange. Maybe try taking it off using rmdir in place of putfile and typing out the string that you used to add the song. It ended in /xxx.m4a where xxx is your songtitle.
Then try readding it. That is my only idea.

I really don't think that this can mess up your iPhone. If it does, you can go through a simple restore.
How long does it take to send the files to the phone? It's been at booting iphone for a couple minutes now. =/

I had the same problem untill I powered off my phone then powered it back on. That might be the only thing you have to do in order to get them working if not try using m4a ringers instead then power off and back on.
