like the subject, I am totally disappointed with Apple for the 3.1 update.
I do like the new iTunes update, but not for the iPhone. They should have told us if the update is only mean for 3GS and not for 3G.
now my phone is keep shutting down (5-7 times each day), Keep on looping in signal searching process, slow respond for everything, and half life of the battery compare to before.
I think the only way for me to fixed this is by upgrade my phone to 3GS.. :dft006:unhappy

That sounds strange... - have you tried to install 3.1 as NEW on your iPhone, and not as an update? / Have you tried to downgrade to 3.0 - to see about that?

As well you should.
For here is a company that released an update that added new itunes features, but caused more iphone problems and fixed few of the existing bugs.
I believe we are all in the Apple extended beta period where WE are all unknowingly testing their operating system.
I wonder if any of these bugs are actually damaging the phone.

mine's much better than with 3.0.1
I think you should restore, and set it as a new iPhone.
everithing's faster, battery life's better... I haven't had any of those problems
good luck

The update is for all models of the iPhone (2G, 3G and 3G[S]). Others have reported problems with the 3.1 update, which is why you need to learn to WAIT THINGS OUT! :dft012:wink

Too bad I didn't wait, I upgraded the night that they released it and ever since, I've regreted it every single minute. Lol.

Back to some GREAT advice already given. Have you restored the phone as a new device? If you don't want to do that you may try a hard reset.

Thanks guys, I will try to perform a total reset asp ... just want to make sure one thing.... for the apps that I've purchased, can I download it again for free in Apps store? I want to try setting the phone from scratch rather than restore from my backup since It's so many error with current backup...

A friend of mine just got a replacement phone. His original was backed up & the new one restored by the Genius. Later, he noticed many apps were missing. When he went to re-download the apps, the Apple Store said he had already purchased them and they were installed again as if they were free.
YMMV

And if you restore as new from the PC where your iTunes account is you won't even have to redownload the apps.

I'm glad I'm waiting to upgrade. I'm jb on 3.0 and happy.
I'm stock on 3.0 and happy. I have way better battery life than I ever had on my 3G and everything works great. I would love to update to a superior operating system if I ever read there is one.

I'm staying away from 3.1 for now. Everything's running well on 3.01 and not enough improvements on 3.1 to justify loosing my Jailbreak. I may even hold off on the update after a JB is available for 3.1 on the 3GS due to all these bug reports with 3.1. I may wait until 3.1.1.
3.1.1 is next goal, and that won't happen unless I get a lot of glowing reports first.

Just read that OS 3.1 will stop exchange sync for 3G and 2G devices if server require device encryption.
so sad, for 3G user like me who still want to access their work mail, they have to stop update the OS to newer version or switch to 3GS. :-(

thats impossible. apple doesnt let you do this. unless dev team comes up with a downgrader it shall be impossible.
i lost my jailbreak and i knew but i am not sure why i pressed the damn update bottom... but 3.1 giving me edge issue. its almost like it wants to me to 3g and nothing else, it switches to grps many many times.

2G and 3G owners are able to downgrade.

Technically, Apple stores should be replacing units if the problem is replicable in the store.
I'm just sayin'!

I update my 3G to 3.1, battery life is better, I still have exchange email and all of my apps reloaded. I updated as new device.
I like 3.1.

Every time I look at the 'update' button in iTunes- I get a shiver down my spine.
Just thinking about the possibility of not being able to Jailbreak scares me :|

I'm staying clear, for the time being anyway. I've been constantly checking the dev-team blog, it's like an obsession.

same here, but the only problems i have so far is crappy ass battery life, and loss of key-click sound. hopefully the next update will fix that. i will however wait from now on for a few weeks for updates.

Updated to 3.1 the other day before reading this website and now at the worse possible time I cannot receive voicmail!!!!
Is there anyway to downgrade? if so, where? Is there a way to check my voicemail other than visual voicemail? I tried calling my number but that doesn't work

I actually restored as a new phone and re-installed everything manually with the exception of backed up contacts and calendar events. I've had no issues whatsoever with battery drainage or other reported bugs. I actually feel pretty lucky considering all the issues I read about.
Still with that said I'll be glad when 3.1.1 comes about because I think everyone that has updated to 3.1 is basically doing the final beta testing for the 3.1 OS.

A lot of complaints about 3.1 are documented and some workarounds are described here:

has anyone experiencing these problems enabled tethering?? The reason I ask is because after updating to 3.1 I was experiencing freezing all the time whereas I would have to reset the phone using the power and home button. I was also experiencing problems with connecting to the internet, battery life decreased significantly, and phone performance was sluggish. I had restored it and the syched the back-up onto my phone yet no change in anything. I then for some odd reason deleted the internet tethering shut the phone off for about 30 minutes. I then waited for the phone to shut off due to low battery and then fully charged it and didnt have any of these problems since. I know it sounds weird but so far I havent had these problems again. Something I just wanted to ask, is there anyway to get ur contacts and text messages back in the phone if u restore it as a new phone without syncing ur old back-up to the phone?

I recently restored my iPod Touch from 3.1.1 to 3.0. It requires a developer environment.
I used Organizer ( a program you can launch from xCode.). From Organizer, sevect device and then you can select from available device OS. The issue here is that iTunes automaticaly deletes old OS images when you upgrade to a new OS. These are .ipsw files. I found my last two .ipsw files in "trash". I copied both files to:
Home Folder > Library > iTunes > iPod/iPhone Software Updates
Also I made a backup of the folder.
Then I used Organizer again to drop back and got an error message: "ERROR: Cannot restore older epoch without using DFU". So I needed to get into DFU mode.
How to get into DFU mode? I found the following link.:
http://thebigboss.org/guides/dfu-mode/
Difficult, but I succeeded and the drop back worked. I needed to re-download everything from iTunes.
I finally took the plunge and upgraded (notice I use the word upgraded, not updated). I am pleased to announce I have had none of the problems reported by some of the unlucky disappointed people. Not only does everything work better including the battery, but one of the only problems I had before; the backlight staying dim when the phone woke up until hitting the sleep button again, is gone.
Obviously, my results aren't the same as everyone's, but I am quite happy !

I'm on a mac and am deathly afraid to upgrade/update to 3.1...an awful lot of horror stories. Just wondering if the majority of the people experiencing problems are on a PC as opposed to a mac.

The performance of firmware on the iPhone is unaffected by which platform you use to upgrade to it.

You can sync your contacts to a Gmail/Yahoo account in iTunes. I strongly recommend backing them up, the iTunes backups also have them, but it's a good idea to have them backed up in an email account in case you have to restore to factory settings. You can only back up your SMS messages if you jailbreak the phone. They are backed up in the iTunes back up, but they would be gone for good if you had to restore to factory settings.

I'm not upgrading until I have better news than this.
