I would like to stream music from my iTunes to my home stereo. The idea is to run speakers outside to my patio and control the music via remote on my iPhone. I'm just not sure whats the best way to this. Thanks in advance...

Apple TV works great for this.

But if you don't need the video capability of the AppleTV, the Airport Express will do exactly what you need. It has a stereo output for streaming music or "AirTunes" through iTunes. And you can control AirTunes with the Apple Remote app for iPhones/iPod Touches.

Great I think airport is the way to go!

Another option would be if the sound card on your PC has an optical output, run that to your stereo's input, then do that.
If you already have a router, then AirPort Express seems redundant, since it's a wireless router at the same time.

Except typically if you want to stream music from an inside computer to outside speakers, you'd typically try to avoid running all that cable.
And there's nothing wrong with redundancy - especially when the airport express is a better router than most people have anyway.

True, I suppose it would depend on how far the computer is from the stereo. Though on the other hand, optical cable will never drop signal and doesn't require any extra steps as far as setup goes.
I have a pretty kickass router, so to me it would be a waste, but for others yes it will work well.
