I dropped my iPhone in the toilet. I immediately took it out, let it dry in the sun for a couple minutes, disassembled the iPhone, dried the inside a bit, and now it's reassembled sitting in a bag of rice.

I hope my steps didn't do more harm than good...

How many people have had this rice thing work?

No... The toilet seat was up (doh!) and my iPhone was on the sink. I just got done brushing my teeth and my left hand smacked the iPhone right off the sink and straight into the toilet.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think disassembling it is recommended. Either way, I think you've got a good chance that it will be ok. I've heard that you should power it off, do a quick dip in Isopropyl alcohol, and place it in a rice bag for several days, initially under a heat lamp.

Good luck with it !

I suspect you will be fine. When Sandi dropped hers in water I had not yet heard of the rice and alcohol trick, so we did it a bit differently (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-3gs/sandi-doesnt-deserve-a-3g-s-50627.html#post480789).

I was just reading a similar story on here about this girl who dropped hers in the toilet whats up with all the iphone's landing in the toilet. People keep your phone out of the bathroom!

Another user dropped his iPhone in the toilet while urinating.

Good God, people - I'm pretty much joined at the hip to my iPhone, but even I take a break while whizzing...

After Apple told me my phone's water sensor had been activated, I choose to keep mine out of the bathroom all together. I certainly wouldn't leave it on the sink, or counter top for that matter, while brushing my teeth. IMO bathrooms and iPhones just have a bad history together.

A tip if this happens to anyone else (works good with all water damage):

Get ahold of a bunch of those small bags you get in all electronic products you purchase, they are usually labeled "Silica gel". These pratically eat moisture. Where to get them in great numbers? Try the local home electronics shop. I had an ipod that got in contact with to much water (dropped out of my pocket into a bucket of water). Quickly I went to a nearby electronics store and got a whole shoppingbag of silica gel. Two days in the bag sealed tight and no more moisture, and the ipod has been working since then.

KabaModern

Yeah, I read about the silica gel, too; however, I had rice at home already, so I opt'd for that...

yep, i always keep the silica gel packs...never know when you going to need them...

Just toss them in a bag and collect them...

i know a few people who have had the rice trick work on other devices...no one i know dropped their iphone in water though.

If they did, i would certainly recommend rice...if not, ill give them a few dozen packs of silica gel =)

Ill tell you what though, i bought some luggage not to long ago..3 bags total, Large-med-small....each one of those bags had about 10-15 packs of silica gel hidden in all the pockets. In case someone is buying luggage soon =)

i did the same thing! i was freaking out too.

turn it off and put it in rice. thats what I did. it took a few days, but she finally started functioning again. now the only issue i have is the home button has to be pressed alittle harder than it use to, but its since gotten easier than it was in the beginning. lol i called my bestfriend who works for apple like right away and she said to try everything before taking it into apple because once they see the water damage they wont replace. i waited 2 days and took it in. i didnt replace it at first thinking she would come around and she did.

i have hope for yours! just wait it out.

My daughter's iPhone got wet. We soaked it in a baggie of rice for several days. Then I got to thinking that moisture can't escape the bag, so maybe sealing it up isn't good. I took it out of the bag and BURIED it in rice in a bowl. It stayed there several more days. Altogether it was about 10 days. Phone worked fine after that... for about 2 weeks. Then it died :(
If it happened again I'd find some silica gel. I don't think rice is effective. Plus, I'd leave it longer. Plus I'd probably change out the silica gel once or twice. Or, if you can find an oven or some such device where you can heat it up without damaging it, that might work, too.

GauntMan
08-31-2009, 12:14 PM
The advantage of silica gel is that it wonīt release the moisture back into the bag, even if filled to capacity with moisture. Itīs kind of like a diaper, if itīs heavy enough to have absorbed half a litre of pee itīs still dry on the surface as the moisture is bound in the molecular structure.

So, it was over 24 hours in the rice. I took it out and noticed the water was gone from the camera lens that was built up but it still will not power on... It's back in the rice now. I don't have much hope...

I had started a new thread on this because it powered on with no screen damage, etc. however it was stuck in DFU mode. I eventually was able to restore it but the water completely killed the Home button. I took it back to Apple and paid their $199 fee to get a replacement iPhone, since the water-indicators clearly flagged my iPhone as having water damage!

:( Oh that stinks! was the $199 for the 16GB?

My phone got water on it last night, nothing major I had it in my back pocket upside down and when I went to sit on the couch I spilled a glass of water all over me, I didn't think something like that would damage it but sure enough the phone wont turn on :dft004:tears so it is sitting in rice right now. I am praying that it works since I don't really have the extra $200 to dish out.

It's $199 whether you have the 8gb or 16gb model, it's their "fee" to replace your phone because of abuse.

Whatever you do, wait as long as you possibly can before attempting to power it up. You must be patient because the slightest amount of moisture can short out components. If you think it's dry after 4 days, wait 2 more. However, I'm afraid you may be SOL as you state it won't turn on. It's possible your early attempt(s) to power it up has already taken its toll though.

I think I will forever be at a loss as to how phones wind up in toilets unless I actually drop one in. I honestly can't think of ever dropping anything in a toilet besides fecal matter, tp, and spiders, let alone a phone.

My toilet is directly to the left of my sink (maybe a few inches apart), and my phone was sitting on the sink on the left-hand side. I was washing my hands and I turned to my left to grab a towel and I knocked my phone into the toilet. Unfortunately for me, the toilet seat was not down.

That's how mine happened.

Good luck! Make sure you check all your buttons, etc. Mine restored but was in a DFU boot loop, until I put it back in the rice for a few more days, but then my Home button didn't work. Check your Home button, sleep/wake, ringer, headphone jack, etc..

A replacement is $200.
