View Full Version : Snow Leopard Issues and quirks

Here's a couple of the problems I've encountered so far.

1.Third party screen savers aren't working because they are compiled as 32 bit and need updated to 64 bit.

2. Vuze Bittorrent Client gives this error when opening files by clicking torrent links.
Open Error
'file://localhost/Users/username/whatever.torrent'
could not be opened:
Not a File

The work around is to drag the torrents in or copy the link location and paste it into Vuze. Download speed are slow and port forwarding won't work with the firewall enabled, even if an exception for the program has been created.

The Vuze Devs have stated that some of the issues are due to the newly discontinued Carbon-based SWT, and some of it is due to 64bit java and that they are working on a fix.

Just a few issues here.

:046:thumbs_down The Logitech Control Center wouldn't work to program the wheel button to activate Expose/Spaces. Research on the net suggests it is 32/64 bit issue. They recently released an update but it will not install on 10.6. In order to install Logitech's latest mouse/keyboard control center (v3) I had to view the app contents and specifically select the .mpkg to do the install. Even then, no Expose/Spaces support, but it does launch from preferences without any issues.

I always assign my middle mouse button to show Expose, All Windows. In order to make it work I had to assign Expose/Spaces to my F5 key, tell the Keyboard to use F keys instead of special functions, then assign the middle mouse button to F9 (if Expose/Spaces is set to F9 you can't do the assignment in Logitech because it launches Expose), then change keyboard back to use special assignments, then change Expose/Spaces to use F9 for showing All Windows.

:046:thumbs_down In order to use my Safari plugins including AdBlock and Glims I had to change it to 32 bit.

:029:eyeswideopen And I didn't change my kernel to boot in 64 bit just yet, stayed with the default of 32 bit. The change isn't complicated, involves a plist change or manually holding down the 6 and 4 key while booting to activate 64 bit. There is a program that will make the plist change for you on CNet (http://download.cnet.com/32-or-64-bit-Kernel-Startup-Mode-Selector/3000-2094_4-10966633.html).

No other issue yet.

I already started a thread with this topic. I titled it "port forwarding problems with snow leopard" and then later tried to change it to "Snow Leopard problems" but it just changed the title that is right above my text and not the actual thread title. I PM'd a Mod to fix the title. Here it is, http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/mac-os-x/port-forwarding-problems-with-snow-leopard-53842.html

I actually started posting there, but changed. Didn't want to limit it to port forwarding. The mods can merge them.

Ok, it's not really limited to port forwarding though, I also mentioned screen savers and asked if anyone was having other Snow Leopard issues. I sent PM's to Dave and macgirl to change the thread title.

Dave said he would fix it when he got home from work.

I have now tried 64 bit kernel mode and it runs everything fine except it really messes with my mouse. Hopefully Logitech will release an updated driver set and control center soon. I went back to 32 bit kernel since there isn't a big advantage to running the kernel in 64 bit.

I do love the 64 bit apps though. and I find that VMWare Fusion with Windows 7 32 bit as a guest OS runs faster and smoother on Snow Leopard.

OK I just downloaded an album from Vuze without a problem.
It still works, it's just that the speeds aren't as fast if you have port forwarding set up and your Mac firewall enabled and you have to copy the link rather than clicking it.

Did you get an error when clicking the link and have to copy or drag the torrent in?
Do you have port forwarding set up on your router?
Did your connection have a green light?
How was the DL speed?

When i click the link it just starts downloading and i'm not sure what port forwarding is.Everything i've downloaded today has been really fast-faster than it usually is for me. Just grabbed any album to take a screen shot for you, if that helps answer any of the questions you are asking me Europa.

Bitewound, these issues have to do with port forwarding so if your not using that, you're not going to experience these problems.

I recommend setting up port forwarding to maximize your download speeds. Click view and then look to the far left of the torrent, you'll never get past the yellow smiley face icon if PF isn't set up or isn't set right. It will turn green once working properly and not blocking connections. I'd wait until they fix these problems though.

Rick, when I got my logitech mouse I was not able to get any of their software working properly, so I just purchased SteerMouse, which is GREAT. I think it was about $20. You can fully customize all of the mouse buttons and wheels, and I've had no issues with updates for the 18 months I've been using it.

So I can't say if it will definitely work with SL, but I bet it will. I think there's a trial available to test it out.

The only issue I had is cyberduck isnt supported in SL yet :/
EDIT: the new cyberduck beta works great on SL
But adium works and everything else seems to work too. I have noticed increased RAM usage which is probably because of the 64bit apps.

Oh did anyone else notice that there are 2 apps missing? I can't figure out what they are but there are 2 blank spaces in my applications folder.

I have the exact same problem with port forwarding in Vuze not working across the Snow Leopard firewall. I posted a message to the Vuze forums and the response was basically that I needed to fix my firewall settings. So if the problem isn't fixed, I may have to make a permanent switch over to uTorrent or Transmission.

Jaadu VNC problem.
I can't log in on the iPhone with encryption. Works fine without encryption. It gives me a password error with encryption. I've tried it multiple times and the password is correct.

Can someone else check this? I'm not sure if it's a Snow Leopard problem, but Jaadu worked fine with encryption for me before updating the OS.

We ran into many issues and I am still having many problems. One being messing the whole wifi settings, I had to re-install my printer software, I can only print now through usb not wireless, have even been on the phone with printers customer support and they told me it was the OS. It changed all my settings for mouse, etc. preferences. I cannot find now how to double click to open an app, they changed the settings and there are several options which are now gone. I have wifi working now for internet but still it's the bluetooth stuff that I am having problems with.

What do you mean they switched to "base 10"?
Google it and you will see a lot of controversy. Basically the way windows (and OSX up until now) defined a KB was 1024B, MB as 1024KB, GB as 1024 MB, etc. Well the prefix kilo, mega, giga, etc are base 10. So really KB is 1000B, MB is 1000KB, and GB is 1000MB. This is the way hard drive manufacturers define a GB and thats why you don't have a full 160GB usable space on a 160GB hard drive. Well in snow leopard, a 160GB drive shows up as 160GB usable space.

acosmichippo

i see. i didn't know you were referring to storage space. I think they probably just did that to more intuitively represent how much space is left on a disk.

Thanks, does the beta fix all the Cyberduck SL problems?

acos, as far as the jaadu problem, it would be ok to use it on my local network non encrypted, since this data is being encrypted through my network itself anyway, right?

acosmichippo
09-02-2009, 10:15 PM
sure is. the only reason you'd encrypt it on your network would be to prevent users on that network from accessing the data... like you might want to do in a large workplace, for instance. But if it's your house (and you're confident in your security), i wouldn't worry about it.

i still have to wait for my itunes library to transfer before i can install snow leopard and try it out.

As a newbie to MAC, would you recommend updating? I've had this computer for a couple of months now (no, it's not new - it was last November though LOL), but I am far more knowledgable about Windows than Mac..

My son told me to update it, but I'm not taking the word of someone that isn't as knowledgeable about computers as others - (FWIW - He's 22 and just loves Apple products - but that's about the extent of his knowledge).

I'll tell ya, I'm not impressed with Snow Leopard despite some of its nice new stuff. It has too many niggling issues and frankly I get beachballs that sit for 10-40 seconds a lot! In contrast, I am so impressed with the RTM of Win7 that I can't wait to find me a slim little laptop that supports 4-6GB and a touchscreen. I'll be relinquishing my MBP to the backup position.

I'm gonna have to try a fresh install and see if that helps anything.

Applejack isn't compatible with SL yet either. They recommend uninstalling it before updating to SL, but if you didn't uninstall it first, like me, you can do it afterwards.

If you try to run or uninstall Applejack after updating to SL, it won't work.
Here's the directions for uninstalling it;

Go to the Applejack project page and download and install the new version. After re-installing it, you'll be able to uninstall it by running this script in Terminal;

sudo /var/root/Library/Scripts/applejack.sh uninstall

You can also uninstall it by rebooting in single user mode and entering the command; applejack uninstall

What's freezing? The only problem I've had is firefox will give me the beach ball when I try to upload something and it only happens 1 out of 5 times. I just force quit and launch. It's somewhat expected since firefox hasn't been updated to support 10.6 yet.
What exactly is freezing for you?
