OK,
I bought a first gen i-touch from a lady that says it just quit. She assumed it was the battery. I brought it home and itunes doesn't recognise it intially, and searches apple for the needed resources.
Now, the itouch is recognized is in recovery mode.
I proceed with recovery with the firm that itunes chooses for it....the 3.0.
it proceeds and at the stage of restoring firmware it hangs....i mean it hangs and I lay down and nap and it is still hanging.
So, now what should I do next...what would you do next?
Thanks!

I would download 2.0 instead or even an earlier version. Once downloaded hold down the shift key on your keyboard then click on the restore button on itunes. It will open up a window asking for the firmware. Select the earlier firmware and click ok. See if that restores it.

Are you surprised? The lady said it was not working.

It was probably dropped or submersed in water. Caveat emptor.

Is there an indicator down in the earphone jack on the ipod touches ? If so if it had water damage it would be a little red dot.

Ok,
I looked in the head phone jack, and the color is white...if that is how you look. I am brand new to the Touch so just bare with me If I am misunderstanding how to tell if it has water damage.
I am connected to Itunes at the moment and going through an update and firmware restore. I have an apple logo and the bar has reached the end underneath it. I am now seeing that Itunes is restoring firmware.
As far as visible damage. There is none. This Ipod touch is a 9.5 of a scale of 10. It had been well taken care of.
I am making more visible progress this time around. Throughout the upgrading...my usb has dinged many times. Is that usual? Sounding as if it is connecting/disconnecting...I am look at restoring firmware for the last 45 minutes....
what else do you recommend?
