how do u turn off the iphone gps? also how u you restrict the att family map from locating the phone..... thanks

Airplane mode will turn off everything. Besides doing this, there is no other way to disable the GPS.

Settings-General-Location Services-Toggle OFF.

Location services incorporates GPS. Turning this off, will turn your GPS off as well.

doing this would be a sure way to lose your phone....

How so? I'm curious, since I never have location services on unless I am actually using GPS or routing with Google maps from my current location - which is maybe 1-3 times a month at best. The rest of the time my GPS is off and I haven't lost my phone yet.
