I have looked through some pages here and I didn't see my problem.

I have the 8GB IPhone 3g running the 3.0.1 OS

I have a D-Link DIR-615 router set up on WPA security, mainly for the windows based devices I have because they have problems connecting with WEP. I also have mac filtering on but both iphones are on the list.

I have 2 iphones and both have the same problem. If I reset my network settings on the iphones and connect it connects just fine, the minute I enter into a non-internet app or lock my phone I loss the wifi and when i open up my mail or an internet based app it asked me for the password again. I enter the password and it tell me incorrect password, and I know the password is correct. I have reset the router many of times and have done a restore on the phone, both from a backup file and a new restore. I have had the phones for about 2 months now and this problem starting happening about a month after we got the phones.

Try without MAC filtering and see if the problem persists. Then try without WPA encryption and see if it works then.
I hate to say it, but the problem most likely resides with the router more than the phone. There is a level of security that is preventing auto connect.

On my router at home, I have DHCP enabled, but "assigned" IP addresses. I also use WEP because my PC and router don't like WPA.
Also, check to make sure that you have the correct MAC address for the phone. one character off can make all the difference.

I tried with the same security setting with mac filtering off and same results

Right now I have tried to turn security off and mac filtering on and that seems to work so I will keep it at that. Now the problem is that when the phones goes idle for some time it forgets the network and does not auto reconnect.

Now, I will tell you this: When I'm on my home network and my phone goes to sleep, when I wake it initially, it shows 3G as the connection. But it's still connected to my WiFi, and make take as long as 90 seconds for the icon to appear. Make sure that you aren't jumping the gun, waking the phone, thinking it's no longer connected and then trying to get it connected again.

It does come back up after the phone wakes, takes about 5 minutes but it does. So should I just a password off of it until I can try it with a different router?

If you're ok with your neighbors stealing your bandwidth...

I just wouldn't use WiFi on the phone until you can get a new router. If you get a newer router, it should work fine with WPA2 and Macs, Windows, Linux, PS3, Apple TV, iPhones, etc.

I am not but I am will sacrifice it so I can use wifi on my phone, until I can get a new router.
