Is it possible to change the SMS tones?? Do you require a jailbroken phone as mine is not jailbroken

Yes, you would need to jailbreak. Once jailbroken, you'd change them by using SSH to modifying the existing SMS tone files.

SSH allows you to connect to your phone remotely allowing you to modify system files.

When I was using FW 2.x, ToneFx (a Cydia app) worked great at managing tones. It even let's me shuffle ringtones. However, I haven't tried injecting new tones since the 3.x update. Not sure if it still works since Apple changed USB talk.

I have no problems with the beta. And you just need to look a little harder. Right underneath the beta is the stable 4.1.9 release...
