Yeah so when I connect to a Wi-Fi signal, I'll start up Safari and as soon as I go somewhere, it switches back to EDGE. I don't know why it does this. I've read other places that some other people were experiencing this problem. I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this?

The signal you are getting may just be the router. Does it have an internet connection? Are other computers on that network working?

Yes. For example, I was at my friend's house and he has Wi-Fi and he was on his MacBook surfing the net just fine. My iPhone, on the other hand, was switching back to EDGE every time I wanted to go somewhere. And it wasn't just his house, this happens everywhere I go that has Wi-Fi. It gives me the Wi-Fi icon as if it's working properly, but when I go somewhere, it goes back to the EDGE icon.

I know for me that my iPhone wouldn't work until I changed the encryption from 64 to 128 on my router. So, my iPhone saw the wifi and had the wifi signal but when I went to check mail or go on Safari it would switch over to Edge. Maybe this will help.

Thanks for the help, but I don't have Wi-Fi at home. I'm talking about when I go ANYWHERE that has WiFi, even places like Starbucks and stuff. Every WiFi connection that I "connect" to does this, and I have no clue why....

I am having the same problem but have yet to find a solution. I connect to a WiFi network as noted by the WiFi signal strength in place of the 'E' for Edge. Once I use safari it switches back to the E and I lose my WiFi signal bars. Any help would be great.

GUYS GUYS calm down.
Have you tried connecting at a regular house router?
Starbucks, McDonalds, etc WiFi's require you to subscribe. Your iphone WILL connect intially but the server will refuse it and thus switches back to EDGE. And some of these Available networks that you see are sometimes not routers but a subnet connection.
I have not had any problems connecting. It works great at home. when I leave the premisis, it switches to Edge, when i come back it automatically switches to WiFi. Same thing at work and the same goes for my school as well. Using it at school is awesome. campus wide WiFi.
reply with specifics so we can try to help you.

I ran into this problem on a wep protected network yesterday. When entering the password make sure that unless you are connecting to an apple base station, you change the password type to Wep hex or ascii which is on the tap above the password field on the enter password field.

I'll try that right now...

Well, I did exactly as you said and I still do not have any connection to WiFi as would be symbolized by the WiFi bars replacing the E. When I go to networks, however, it has a blue check next to it....

Same problem here... I just got my iPhone running. I'm at home, where I have wireless on both my PC and Mac. When I connect the iPhone to the wireless network all seems to be fine, but as soon as I launch anything that requires the web on my iPhone, it switches to EDGE. No clue how to fix the issue...

There appear to be several issues with WiFi.

1.) The DNS issue. Search the forums here for help with that.

2.) A need to reset WiFi settings and start over: forget existing WiFi networks, reset network setting in settings, restart iPhone. May help, may not.

3.) WEP issue. Search the forums here for help with that.

4.) iPhone and WiFi AP not fully compatible: try a different AP (hotspot, friend, etc.).

5.) ?????

In my case, on my home WLAN, I experienced issues #1 and #4. I solved #1 by overriding my AP-supplied DNS address with my ISP's DNS addresses. While that cured my DNS problem it didn't help my issue with the AP. Symptoms with my AP included very poor range, inability to hold signal, and inability to reconnect to the AP without being around 10' from the AP. Swapping APs cured this, but I happened to have a spare AP around that I wasn't using. Still had the DNS issue, but that was easily solved.

Now, when at home my WiFi works great. If by chance I do walk far enough away to lose signal (say, outside in the garage) it switches seamlessly to EDGE, and then back to WiFi when I am again in range.

Good luck!

Yeah, after staying up for a few late hours I got it working - switched my router to 128-bit and reset the password. That seems to have squared it!

Now I just gotta get my SMTP issues figured out... ;)

But what about when you're on a public (non-password protected) Wifi? How do you configure the iphone to stay on the Wifi you're connected to and not hop off to Edge?

I find that simply switching the wifi off and on again, or going into 'airplane mode' and back kicks it back to the wifi if it loses the signal. At my office I'm really far from the wireless hub and my phone loses the signal when it goes to sleep. I often have to 'reset' the wireless... you might just be getting a poor connection or something.

This just started happening to me and it's really frustrating.. Does anyone know why the iPhone would work perfectly for over a month and then all of a sudden stop accepting wifi?

I'm having this problem as well. It connects fine, but as soon as I want to use Safari it switches back to Edge. I've never had a problem with any other thing on my wifi network, which includes an XBOX 360, Wii, PS3, 2 laptops, 1 computer, 3 Nintendo DS systems, and more. :( It's not that bad, because Edge has been pretty decent to excellent in my home, but I really wish It would work with wifi on the browser.

NVM, i got mine to work. I removed it from my list, restarted the router, restarted my iphone, reentered wifi information and it now works. I'm so happy right now.

i'm a computer idiot. i have same problem of switching back to edge from wireless network. can anyone tell me how to change encryption on a netgear router?

Same exact thing happens to me, it shows the WIFI signal and everything but once I goto a website on Safari, it will force me to use Edge. I know that my router is properly installed because my computer that is on the router through hardwire works and I get full bars when my iPhone reads it, it's just the fact that my iPhone won't use it, it will use Edge instead. I've had it working for about 1 month straight then all of a sudden after unplugging the router and reconnecting it, I've had this problem. I've tried everything from fully restoring, to resetting the network settings on my iPhone, to removing my WiFi Network off the iPhone, restarting my phone, and restarting the router and still it's forcing me to use Edge. I'd appreciate it if someone can help me resolve this. I use a Linksys BEFSR41 as my router and Linksys Wireless-G Access Point for the WiFi.

Edit: LMAO, I found my problem, I forgot to connect the internet cable from my router to my Wireless-G. LOL...newb

That is funny. Turns out the iPhone was doing its job: while it connected to your WiFi network OK, when it couldn't access the 'Net with it it dutifully switched to EDGE.

For others who are having this problem, make sure your iPhone really is connecting to your WiFi APs properly. Check the IP addresses it gets, try connecting to Google via IP address, etc.

I have one AP that my iPhone just doesn't like. But the symptoms with that AP are not the same as being described here: when using that AP my iPhone would not switch to EDGE. Instead it hung onto the WiFi connection till Safari errored out. I had to turn WiFi off (on the iPhone) to force it to use EDGE. But once I stopped using that AP all has been (subjectivly) fine.

The only time I get forced onto EDGE now is if the WiFi I am connected to is secured with browser authentication and I hadn't yet authenticated with Safari.

BTW: This doesn't mean the iPhone has the same WiFi performance as my laptop. I can easily reach more low signal-strength APs with my laptop than with my iPhone. That's just the nature of using WiFi on such a small device.

I had issues with all my gaming devices connecting to my home wifi. (XBox 360, PS3, Wii) until I updated the firmware on the wireless router. The 360 was slow and the other two wouldn't connect at all until I did the firmware update. Now they all connect easily and run fast. This was before I got my iPhone, but since getting it I've had no issues getting wifi at home with my iPhone.
