A new version of the Slingbox Mobile app, 1.1, has been submitted to the App Store for approval. Fixes include true 16:9 display and a stretch mode for video that still doesn't quite fill the iPhone screen. Also included are true DISH STB integration, minor UI enhancements and bug fixes. And coupled with 3G Unrestrictor should be the best app ever.

Curious - why no jailbreaking for you?

Two main reasons, three all-together:
1) My friend did and it seriously slowed down his phone;
2) Why mess with something running perfectly? I remember I broke into my old Nokia (maybe a bad comparison) and ever since I did it never worked the same, even after I re-set it.
3) Even though I'm careful with the phone, doesn't jailbreak void the one-year warranty?

1. There is no slowdown with the 3GS due to the increased speed and extra memory.
2. I thought mine was good (and it was) until I started jailbreaking.
3. You can restore to stock condition via iTunes before having your iPhone checked out.

+ 1 I tried not to jailbreak my 3GS, but just couldn't resist. So much more it can do now.

And its completely safe / worth it?
Unlocking it first won't mess with my AT&T service or anything?
All the apps and stuff are free and easy to find?
Napoleon_PhoneApart

It's safe.
It won't mess with your AT&T service.
Cydia has a lot of free apps and a few very nice paid apps, which are very inexpensive.
You still have to pay for App Store apps.

If your on AT&T there is no need to unlock, just jailbreak and it will not alter your service in any way, hasn't for me anyway. Some of the apps in cydia/icy are free, some are not, just like in the app store. Cydia has a search feature, so yes, they are easy to find, for some apps you may need to add a source, but the most common sources are loaded by default when you install cydia.

the problem i have with jailbreaking is that it's such a pain upgrading firmwares. Not only do you have to wait until there's a jailbreak, but then restore as a new phone, which means you have to have your appstore apps' saved data backed up and reloaded afterwards (which can be a real pain to lose - especially for games), then you have to redo all of your settings, reinstall jailbroken software, etc.
no thanks.

There are a couple of apps that make this much easier.
Pkgbackup and Chronus. Still more of a pain than updating a stock phone, but much easier than starting from scratch.

Just download Chronus from Cydia and use that to back up your app states before restoring. It's a bit unwieldy, because you have to email each backup to yourself separately, but it works.
You can back up all your jailbreak apps with PkgBackup - $2.49 from the Cydia Store. PkgBackup saves its data as a text file in Contacts. Just make sure you sync after backing up, then when you rejailbreak, reinstall PkgBackup and restore all your jailbreak apps in one step.

You don't have to email, you can move the back ups to your computer with SSH all at once.
They are in /var/mobile/Library/Peferences/Timcapsule then just move them back after you install chronus.

I'm with you trnsilver. I won't jailbreak my iPhone either. I've come very close because of all the cool stuff it can do...plus that website that allows you to download any application for free, but the whole upgrading to next firmware sounds so complicated and something I would screw up and lose stuff.
And to the topic, I really wouldn't mind paying the £17 if I didn't have to purchase a slingbox too. All I wanna do is watch live tv on my iPhone. netTV does this but doesn't have hardly enough channels (7 UK channels I believe.)

I can't really understand why some people won't jailbreak as it doesn't void your warranty and makes your iPhone just well... Better ;)

But it becomes a hassle when you want to upgrade firmware.

Worth it though.
I want to see what Saurik is working on for the 3.0.1 update it says in Cydia
Users of 3.0 who are willing to wait for 3.0.1 may wish to wait a while longer :p
(Saurik is working on somthing that is going to make the upgrade process a lot simpler for people who are already using jailbroken devices.)
I know its probably only for the 3.0 to 3.0.1 update but its still somthing :)

I suppose there isn't any reason to upgrade firmware. What could they possibly add that we don't already have?

They both serve the same function. I'd recommend Cydia.

Thousands of people have jailbroken their iPhones, and they all find some way to do firmware upgrades and rejailbreak. If you don't want to jailbreak, that's fine.

Does icy use winterboard?
I'm not sure what you're asking. Icy doesn't use Winterboard to run, if that's what you mean. It's a standalone program, just like Cydia.

Sorry...does it use winterboard to add certain DL'd things to the springboard? ex) themes, weather icons, dock changes...etc.

I would think so. If not, I'm sure it will be updated regularly since it's a pay app now.

Naps I was wondering how legit the Cydia pay-for-app service was? I really want to get 3G unrestrictor but I was to make sure my card number is protected. You trust them?

I do. Your identity is confirmed through Facebook login and I choose to pay through my Paypal account. I've had no problems or concerns with this process.

Woah this seems to be a great app if you happen to own a slingbox, which I don't :P How does it connect to the slingbox at home wifi only or can it use the 3g connection? Probably both right? How long does it take until the video starts loading, if you are in an area with good 3g coverage and reception..

Slingbox Mobile is wifi only, unless you're jailbroken and running 3Gunrestrictor. Loading time is under a minute with a decent 3g signal.

3g unrestrictor would also be good for skype or any other apps/features AT&T has forced apple into making wifi only.
