Jailbreak Help

I am having the hardest time with 1 problem that no one seems to be able to answer.

I followed the link for 3GS - Windows 3.0 to iClarified
I created pwnage folder
I downloaded the redsnow 0.8 link
I downloaded the http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6582.20090617.LlI87/iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
I extract redsnow into the folder
I Connect my iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes
I select my iphone
I press and hold "shift" whild pressing restore
I browse to the pwnage folder but there are no ipsw files

The files are .DMG not .IPSW
I tried this on my Vista and XP machine to no avail. Surely someone has an answer for this. I tried google for a DMG extractor and there are plenty, I tried several of them to no avail.

This is supposed to be simple.

Download PowerISO, there is a trial version, and use it to extract the ipsw from the DMG file.

The link you posted is to an ipsw file, not a DMG....did you use safari to download the file?

No I used internet explorer. Should I use Safari?

Definitely not, safari has a habit of unpacking compressed files into their component parts. But it should have downloaded an ipsw, from the link you posted. Try redownloading again and make sure you put it where you can find it.

Hey Shutter I've redownloaded again, actually 8-10 times on 3 different PCs and every time the files have dmg extensions. I downloaded that PowerISO program but it doesn't list ispw as an extension so it extracted to a daa extension. I could have chosen iso or some other extension.:dft006:unhappy

Yeah I am still having issue's as well, I downloaded it about 10 times, and still no luck.

Have a look here for the proper file and copy it to where you need it.

If you ever restored to 3.0 on vista it will be there.
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

I just downloaded the file with firefox and it downloads as an ipsw file.

I am JB! But now I hooked it back up to itunes and it is stuck on the screen where I have to choose to set up as a new device or restore from backup. What do I do?

Come on and bail me out 1 more time Shutter!

I'm fixing to restore as new.

Bummer! I have no clue. I'm fixing to have to restore mine and I'm sure I'll have to JB it again. I think after that I should be ok. I guess after it adds the firmware you have to restore as new before running the redsnow program. Make sure you are running redsnow 0.8 and not an older version.

I didn't "restore as new" I "set up as new" and it didn't hurt a thing! So now I'm putting my music, apps, data, ect. back on.

Could I have restored from a backup or would that have un JBed my phone? That would sure be easier!

I did a restore from my backup and it is done and still jailbroken

The only issue I am having currently is no service. Not good.

I don't have the restore from backup option anymore! If I click on restore it says it will wipe out all my data. I wonder why I can't pick a backup to restore from?

Well enough for 1 night. I'll try again tomorrow.

Yeah I restored it back so its not jailbroken anymore and will fix it tomorrow. I am also done for the night.

I'm not doing much with jb but I am enjoying:
5 icons in the tray (quicklock is the 5th icon)
all my appointments on the unlock screen
SMS by tapping the up volumn button
background pictures on all screens

What about you?

thank god you dont have a palm pre you would'nt have a clue what to do im glad smart people by pre's cause jailbreaking is just clicking how do you not know how to do it

Well moran, (based on your use of the English language) several people have had major problems getting iTunes to read the firmware download fro iClarity's web site! I had a Palm E2 for a year, TX for 2 years, an Ipaq 211 for a year, and iPhones for a year now so I don't consider myself a mobile idiot as you imply. I would also say that a person who buys a pre doesn't have a device in the class of an iPhone so that doesn't make them smarter.

ok i had a 3g before and decided i wouldnt get a 3gs because i didnt want to give a monopolistic company my money..and how is the pre not in the same class of a iphone? can you answer this can you use aim stream pandora have a phone call going on and have check your email at the same time???? that isnt all it can do i can have up to 23 things open at one time not that i need them open but knowing that i could just makes it that much better than a iphone oh and how come apple was threating sueing palm if it isnt in the same class maybe they were afraid of losing customers like me.. sry talk to me when your able to do everything i mentioned at the same time k??

Jailbreak allows that! I'm not downing the pre but there are currently not many apps for it as compared to the iPhone. My problem with your post was the implications that I'm an idiot because I had trouble jailbreaking my phone and that any pre owner could easily handle the task!

I don't own a pre but from the comparisons I've read they are not in the same class. That's my opinion, right or wrong. And since I'm not on a pre forum bashing their phone I feel comfortable sharing that opinion here.

Jersey, the iPhone is completely capable of running background apps. We also have quite a few apps to choose from that can run in the background.
