Someone just gave me an iphone. I need to find someone in Las Vegas to unlock it for me. I'm on T-mobile, and would like to use it on that network. I would be glad to meet up with some that is willing to unlock it and pay them a reasonable fee. Thanks. Icm@cox.net

We can talk you through it here on the forum.
What model phone is it? V1, 3G, or 3GS?

Once you get this all done, be sure to turn 3G off. T-Mobile has a 3G network, but the hardware in the iPhones is not compatible with it, so you'll have to use Edge.

If it's a V1 you jailbreak and unlock it with redsn0w.
If it's a 3G or 3GS you jailbreak it with redsn0w and then unlock it with ultrasn0w.
If the phone has already been restored to factory setting, just update it in iTunes first. If it still has your friends media on it, restore it to factory settings in iTunes first. Keep in mind it will not let you activate it in iTunes when it's done since you don't have an AT&T SIM, don't worry about that, it will activate later. Next, download the 3.0 IPSW file (needs to corespond with the model iPhone) and save it to your desktop. (this won't affect the 3.0.1 FW you're now running). Next, use redsn0w to jailbreak it (and unlock it if it is a V1). After that, use ultrasn0w to unlock it (if it is a 3G or 3GS). Reboot and it will activate.
Here's the links you'll need and a how to video you can watch before hand.

You need a bittorrent client (program) to download redsn0w from that site. Download Vuze or utorrent if you don't have one.
Ok, that's a V1. It's the original iPhone that was released in June 2007. Some people also refer to it as a 2G. The V1 doesn't have 3G, so you won't have to worry about disabling 3G. You also won't have to use ultrasn0w to unlock it. Just use redsn0w to jailbreak and unlock it, after you reboot your T-Mobile SIM will activate.
Download and save this IPSW file to your desktop, redsn0w will need it. 3.0.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw)
You'll need to put the phone into DFU mode during the jailbreaking process. Here's directions for that (redsn0w will tell you exactly when to do it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KmHNSE3CZI

If you don't have a Bittorrent client, you can download redsn0w directly here http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2009/07/09/download-redsn0w-v08-linux-mac-windows-firmware-v30-iphone-2g-3g-3gs-itouch-jailbreak-unlock-tool/, but you'll need winzip or winrar to unzip/extract it.

Browse and find the IPSW file on your desktop.
It was this one, iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw)

Yeah, it defaults to my documents, but you can change that to desktop. Are you on Windows XP?

Ok you need to download it then. Here it is, it's a big file. It's going to take a while to download depending on your internet speed. Save it right to your desktop.

When you click on it make sure you click save file instead of open file.

Did you click the link I posted above and change it from open file to save file and set the location as desktop?
If you do it right, it should look like this while it's downloading.

I clicked on the link you provide, but it downloaded to a zip file. when i unzip it, it creates a bunch of files and two more folders with more file. I must be doing something wrong. I am now in the processing of downloading and opening without having to unzip...I think.

When you click the link I gave you, a box like this should open up. Where mine says iTunes, yours may save Winzip. You need to change it from open with to save file. If you do that it should look just as it does on my desktop. Is that how you did it?

No.
I double click on the link. A window opens on the top it says "file Download". Do you want to open or save the file? I click save and it down loads it to my desktop as a zip file. When I upzip it using winzip I get 2 folders and 6 files. the folders are: .fseventsd and Firmware. the files are 018-5301-002.dmg, 018-5303-002.dmg, 018-5305-002.dmg, something called BuildManifest.plst, Restore.plst and kernalcashe.release.s5l89oox. I then extract them to a folder.

08-14-2009, 01:13 AM
Ok. I can give you a call tomorrow if you want then.
Maybe if you change that box so it says "opens with iTunes" (like in my screenshot) it will work?
Otherwise, I don't know why it's showing up as a zipped file.
Also, be sure to update iTunes to the latest version before trying this again.

Instead of using Internet Explorer, Install Firefox and download the link from it. It will show up as a IPSW file instead of a zip file if you use Firefox.
From Firefox, click this http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

I would like to close this thread and say a very big THANK YOU to Europa the Genius. She spent hours with me trying to unlock my iPhone. The problem was with Windows Explorer not wanting to allow me to download a file. Anyhow, she figured it out and I am using my iPhone with T-Mobile. THANK YOU SO MUCH...

ok so first a little history, i am familiar with the unlock process, my phone has previously been unlocked on 3.0 but not jailbroken, i decided i wanted to jailbreak and on redsnow clicked to install cydia and icy. all finished jailbreaking quickly and smoothly then when i tried to open cydia it said cydia couldn't recognize it's version because i had clicked to install both cydia and icy and needed to start over. so i restore my phone and lose my unlock and go through the jailbreaking process again with redsnow, and this time just clicked cydia and unlock. now everything goes through and it says it's finished on my PC screen but my phone stays in "downloading jailbreaking data" for about 15-20 minutes, then reboots and is still staying in emergency mode. i have gone through this probably 10 times and can't figure out what is going on. if anyone could PLEASE help me figure this out i'd greatly appreciate it. also i am V1

something to add that i just realized.. while it's stayin in emergency mode, it says my service as tmobile, and not no sim.
tiffanyleigh0212
09-12-2009, 04:31 AM
just tried restoring. still says tmobile as service on screen, but in itunes it says the sim card installed in this iphone doesnt appear to be supported.
i think i'm gonna have a panic attack now.....
