Thanks to many here who helped me jb my 3g. I am wondering with the new updates what am I missing. How difficult is it to go to 3.0 and still jailbreak. I have a little lag now, will it get worse? Is it worth it? I can't imagine not being jailbroke. But the 3.0 sound interesting. Thanks.

If you don't go nuts with themes the lag should be minimal. It's pretty easy to jailbreak 3.0 (or 3.0.1), you just need the latest version of redsn0w and the 3.0 ipsw. The pain is in setting it back up after the restore.
1) Use Pkgbackup from cydia to save your cydia packages, then sync with iTunes
2) Use Chronus from cydia to back up app store (and stock) apps with user data then ssh the contents of /var/mobile/Library/Peferences/Timcapsule to your hard drive
3) Restore to 3.0.1 (set up as new)
4) Re-jailbreak with Redsn0w and the 3.0 ipsw
5) Sync with iTunes
6) Download Chronus and Pkgbackup from cydia
7) SSH the Chronus files you moved to your hard drive back to /var/mobile/Library/Peferences/Timcapsule and restore them with Chronus
8) Run Pkgbackup and restore your cydia packages
9) Reboot phone
10) Apply any other settings that were erased during the restore.
This process has taken my restore/re-jailbreak time from a few hours to around 1/2 to 1 hour.

I just installed it and it seems like the free version is fully functional. The paid version will remove the ads, but what advanced functions are added with the paid version of Chronus?

Pretty sure the only other option is you can "back up all" and "restore all" apps at one time. I am using the free version, heck most of my apps don't need to be backed up anyway, so I just pick the ones that do and back them up. I just started using it on my last restore. It's pretty handy, so I know I will end up buying it, just to support the developer, not for the added functionality of the app.

Ok, forgive me of my ignorance, the chronus and backup are cydia apps so they are downloaded on the Iphone?

Yes, Pkgbackup is a paid app, you can find it in cydia in the cydia store. Chronus is a free app (just search cydia for Chronus), but has a paid version.

Ok, downloaded pkgbackup and chronus on Iphone. I backed up using pkg. At this point do I do anything with Chronus? When I sync with Itunes do I download and install the 3.0.1 version?

You will need to open Chronus and pick which apps to back up. Anything with user data should be backed up. For instance I back up my check book register, I back up my fuel/mileage app, I back up SMS, some games that have saved data etc...
You will need to decide what to back up and what not to, if you pay for the app, you can back it all up with one click. You will then need to move those back ups off the phone or they will be overwritten when you restore. See the location in my first post.
You need to sync with iTunes before you restore, Pkgbackup saves your packages as a contact, that contact needs to be saved to iTunes so when you sync after the restore, it will be put back on the iPhone.
After you have sync'd and moved the chronus files to your computer. You can restore and set up as new.

You can back them up through iTunes, but it will not do it automatically, you need to back them up to an email account. That is unless you have Mobile Me, as it will do this all automatically.

Thanks for hangn around. I am still sync/backup with itunes been about 45 minutes, why is it taking so long?

Try using a different USB port or a different cable.
Is this the first sync (prior to restoring and jailbreaking) or the sync after re-jailbreaking?

Thanks for replying. It is the first sync, been over 2 hours????? How long should it take?

Where is it hung up at? Is it backing up, or has it moved on to syncing? Do you have the latest iTunes installed?

No, I don't believe I have the latest Itune version. It is about 3/4 finished backing up.

Kill the back up, see if the sync will finish. Even my first back up after syncing all my stuff doesn't take that long. You are going to want to update your iTunes before upgrading to 3.0.1.

Thanks, I killed the backup (need to do again?) and it continued to sync, but now stuck on calendars (bout 30 min). What next? let go or kill?

How long has it been since you sync'd?
Hell, I would probably kill it and use Chronus to back up my contacts. You will need to make sure you install and restore your chronus files before using pkgbackup, I would do this anyway, I have issues with iRealSMS if I try to restore my sms after I install iRealSMS.

Ok, I know it has been a while since last sync. Calendar said only 23 changes though. I believe I will kill it then get newest version of Itunes and start over. Thanks.

Good morning all. I finally got syncd. However the backing up process never seems to complete, really slow. Pkgbackup is now in contacts in Itunes. Finally got complete backup. What now?

Shutter thanks for the help. On your original post step 2 "ssh the contents of /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/Timecapsule to your hard drive". Not quite sure what this means? Help.

SSH is just a means of getting into the root files of the phone. You can do it wirelessly with SSH (not difficult, but multiple steps involved in the set up) or you can do it wired (very easy, just connect your phone to the computer).
To do this wired, download iPhoneBrowser (for PC-free) or Diskaid (for Mac-not free) and connect your phone to the computer. Then go to the file location he specified and save the files.
If iPhoneBrowser crashes when the phone is connected, it's because you have an old version of it that is incompatible with the 3x FW. Download a newer version.
Not sure why your backups are taking so long. Maybe it's your computer? But you don't need them anyway since your phone is jailbroken. As long as it lets you sync, you're fine, just kill the back up process.

Hey glad you answered. I went to Cydia and got open ssh and cyberduck on the Mac, but got lost from there. Can you help me out?

Here's directions, http://www.hackthatphone.com/2x/open_ssh.html
If you don't want to bother with all this, just install Diskaid (it's $9.90), it's easier.

Thanks for the reply. I got Diskaid (14 day trial) on the mac now and connected the Iphone to Mac. Now what?

You need to back something up first. Open Chronus and choose one of your apps and back it up. Next open Diskaid and go to /var/mobile/Library/Peferences/Timcapsule. Under Timecapsule, you should see a folder with the name of the app that you just backed up. Click on that folder and save it to your computer.

Sorry, took a stab at it. Went to Diskaid, root folder, fount var/mobile/Library/Preference/Timecapsule, click on copy to mac, hard drive, now it shows copying files. Hope this was correct!

Well it finished copying files. Everything seems ok, nothing seems to be blown up or smoking! I am just not sure what I did or it I did it right.
Europa
08-14-2009, 05:07 PM
Yeah, you did it right. Now just keep that file on your computer. After you restore and rejailbreak, you'll copy right back to the same place you just got it from (Timecapsule folder).

Thanks, I am learning but really feel lost. So after jb then go back to diskaid and pull up same files then click copy to device?
Europa

Rejailbreak > Open Diskaid > Locate the file on your hard drive > Drag it over into Diskaid, into the Timecapsule folder (that will copy it to diskaid and onto the phone).
