Is the long load time of cydia due to the huge number of themes available? If so, does anyone know how to tell cydia to ignore the thousands of new (mostly completely useless) themes that appear every day?

Try removing some of the sources

Thanks RossMc. I think the problem is that some sources have both apps and themes. I'm keen to see new apps, but not really interested in themes. Would it make sense to have themes in theme-only repos, or is cydia refresh time independant of new themes?

The refresh time is based on how many packages reside in the repositories (sources) you have in Cydia. For instance, if you removed the ModMyi source, the load time would be much shorter, as ModMyi is just about the largest Cydia repository out there. However, you wouldn't want to do that, because that repository holds some very popular packages, and it's the only one that hosts several of them - without it, you wouldn't be able to download said packages.

Did you Install all sources through Stefwiz? If so, that's probably the reason. I did that once and my load time went from around 10 or 15 seconds to about 2 minutes. Needless to say, I didn't make that mistake when the next FW was released and I rejailbroke.

Yea I too wish theme sources were separate from app sources. I have no interest in themes yet have to wade through hundreds of them to find an app.

Mike, do you not theme at all or are you just happy with the theme/themes you already have?

I don't theme at all. Last time I did I noticed too much instability and slow-downs. And sometimes with all icons having a similar "look" I found it harder to actually get to the apps I needed. No biggie, and indeed I might try it again, now that I have a 3GS.

But even so, I'd still rather have theme and apps be treated separately within Cydia, even if it meant using a theme source and an app source. Then I could at least remove the theme sources. Boy would that make Cydia easier to use, at least for me.

Has anybody tried Icy? It was an option when I jailbroke. Their website claims it runs faster than Cydia.

I had Icy on a prior jailbreak. It worked very well, I thought.

While we are talking Cydia. What's going on with the Customize App from STE Packaging? I just got back into JB'ing and I keep getting an error message when I try to download the Customize App. I used to love all the features of that App. I read the notice from STE Packaging but was unclear as to what it meant. Has the Customize App been discontinued or only for download if you are still on 2.2??? Mark

I don't think it works on 3.0, Mark.

Thank you sir. I was thinking that it said 2.2. I was like wow 2.2 was way back when I stopped JB'ing. I hate that to because I loved the customize App. Mark

@Tinman,
To each his own of course. I have not found any theme yet to hinder the performance of the phone. I was looking for a change of scenery so i changed my stock theme. Some themes are clearly just thrown together garbage. I have found some that the maker really put time and effort into. Here is what I'm currently using I love blue. Also keep in mind this is on my v1 iPhone not my 3GS. I wanted to keep the 3GS a virgin a little longer, LOL...Mark:ok:ok

While I agree that some themes look pretty, I'm hesitant to add anything anymore that doesn't add functionality, or ease of use. Some themes I've seen seem to make it harder to find apps, as icons have a similar look or style. The default black background, to me, allows icons to really stand out. To me the springboard is just a means to launch apps. Then there are the apps that have no icon in the installed theme, and stand out like sore thumbs.

But like I said, I might try it again someday. Maybe.
