I've had an iPhone for about two months now, and when 3.0 was released, I didn't really have much that I was interested in keeping, so I didn't back it up and set it up as a new phone when I upgraded. As soon as I had done this I jailbroke it immediately.

Now that I've got a whole load of stuff on my phone that I want to keep, what is the best way to go about upgrading official firmware and jailbreaking it?

Is it possible to back up the phone, restore or upgrade, then set up as new phone, jailbreak, and then restore from the back up? Or will I be forced to restore from the backup before I jailbreak it?

From what I have read, the phone will be less likely to run into issues if I don't restore to back up, and obviously I want to get the best performance out of my phone.

It just seems like a lot of hassle to maybe have to start right from scratch when it's just an incremental firmware upgrade that might just fix a bug or two as opposed to a full blown release with a lot of new features.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom on the subject.

I don't recommend restoring from back up because that will leave traces of the jailbreak and it has a potential for causing problems. The restores to factory settings prior to FW updating is the main drawback to jailbreakjng IMO.

You can copy your notes and SMS files and SSH them back in after you rejailbreak.

Here's the method, back up you contacts etc, updates to 3.0.1, restore to factory settings, jailbreak with redsn0w using the 3.0 IPSW, then unlock with ultrasn0w if not on AT&T.

Saurik might be releasing a simple upgrade process that doest require a rejailbreak somtime this week if you want to wait and see.

Yes, that is what I had heard also. To be honest the only thing that I don't want to lose are my texts, so if I can simply save and copy them back over with SSH, then it's not too much of a problem.

Yeah, it's easy to do. Do you use OpenSSH? If not, just get iPhonebrowser and save the SMS file.

I already use it so it's not a problem.

One final question: Is it possible to back up game saves?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

AFAIK, no. The only way to do that is to restore from backup.

Ok, thanks again.

I just updated to 3.0.1 and restored my phone. I wish purplera1n worked for this update, it was so easy. Not sure when the next update is coming out and restoring is a pain.
