2.2.1 unlock mystery

Hi guys, Please forgive if this post was put in the wrong place!

Ive been successful with 2 phones so far, but Im lost on this one.¨

Sure could use your expertise!

Im attempting to upgrade a 2.2.1 G2 phone to 3.0 using Pwnage Tool. I used it with the last good unlocking, but with that phone i started with 1.1.4 and a G1 phone.

I go through them motions but in the end its says I cant alt restore with the custom firm ware as it says 'The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible.

Im from norway, the phone was bought in the USA and used to be a legit At&t contracted phone. Its stuck in DFU mode.

Any suggestions would be great. It is a dark phone now. I can wake it up to a ememgency slide only if I restore without using the custom file vja iTunes. Sure hope to hear from you!

You probably downloaded the wrong IPSW file (2G or 3GS). Be sure to get the 3G 3.0.1 IPSW and save it to your desktop. Then shift restore (option restore Mac) in iTunes finding the desktop file you just saved. Then download the 3G 3.0 IPSW file and jailbreak with redsn0w. It will not downgrade you to 3.0, it will stay on 3.0.1. Then unlock with ultrasn0w and the phone will activate.

Hi Europa, I did find the file you talked about but its a folder and I have no idea what to do with it? To back up, this phone started as 2.2.1. Must a sim card be in the phone for this process? Currently this phone is stuck in slide emergency phase and iTunes will not work with it. Im lost again. Wow, this is a challenge. I've unlocked 2 G1 phones no problem, Im really stuck here. Any suggestions?

HI New news. I did finally manage to get a working file, however, when the restore process completed, iTunes said that the sim card incerted in this iPhone ides not appear to be supported. Now what? I really hope you can hang in there with me! cheers,

The SIM card your using, is it supposed to be in the phone, as in, is it the native carrier SIM card which came with your phone? - I know you mentioned unlocking so i'll go with that.

So, assuming your now running on 3.0.1 - you will now need to dowload the 3.0 .ipsw file as well, this will be required in the jailbreaking process.

Download redsn0w and jailbreak your phone using the 3.0 .ipsw firmware NOT the 3.0.1 Firmware.

Then install ultrasn0w through Cydia and your phone will be unlocked and your SIM card will work as normal.

Hi iphone warrior, thanks for the fast reply.
Im from Norway, using an American 2.2.1 phone with an Norwegian sim.
Im stuck in emergency mode after trying to restore with iPhone1,2_3.0.1_7A40. I had to use pwngtool to get dfu mode, just so I could get itunes to give me the option to restore. I did my option click and selected the above file. It went through the process and in the end its said I am not using the approved sim. I do not have the original sim.

Im not sure what Im running on now because Im stuck in emergency mode.
and cant get inside to look. IM really stuck, been trying to read as much as I can.

Do I need to start over, if so where, which files? for do I do the below starting with redsn0w and files that I already have?

So you've restored and your running 3.0.1 Firmware but stuck on the slide for emergency screen. All you need to do now is, put your phone in DFU mode and run Redsn0w.

Using Redsn0w, I followed the instructions but the process stops with the screen saying Please wait while your device is bering jailborken, and then Waiting for reboot....the screen is black, and I do not know what the redsn0w is asking for. Did I screw up? I cant get the phone to turn on. Perhaps I used the wrong 3.0 file? Redsn0w did accept it in the beginning.

When it says "waiting for reboot", unplug the USB and quickly plug it back in.

Hi guys, nope. I have a totally dark phone now. WOW Im not sure why Im having such a hard time. Clearly I must be doing something wrong. Can I start over. I am getting lost with how many ipsw files there are perhaps I chose a wrong one. I really thought I was in until the screen waiting for reboot. My head is spinning. But Im ready to try again!

Guys, I got it to turn back on and get myself back to emergency mode using Pwangetool. I must be using the wrong ipsw from the beginning. If I was to start from the beginning at this stage, where should I start and which ipsw should i use? I believe Im at 3.0.1 but never saw it to be sure. I started with 2.2.1

Since it's not turning on, I would restore it. Is iTunes recognizing it? If it is, just restore in iTunes. If not, put it in DFU mode and restore in iTunes. It will update you to 3.0.1. After that, you can try jailbreaking it again with redsn0w, I'll link the correct IPSW after you get it restored.

Hi, ok Im doing a pure iTunes update no 3rd party file help. Last time i did this it noticed naturally i have a unsupported sim. Time for bed, this a 40 minute dl, will check tomorrow. MANY THANKS!!! Dan

It's not going to recognize the SIM after you restore. After you jailbreak/unlock it, it will activate the SIM.

For future reference, when you refer to your phone, you can simply call it a 3G. Although I'm sure you meant generation 2, the abbreviation G2 isn't commonly used or widely accepted and will lead to confusion because the first model iPhone is referred to as V1 or 2G. You have the second model which is a 3G, the third model is a 3GS.

Download it with Firefox, not with Safari or Explorer. They will download it as a .zip. Firefox will save it as a .ipsw. You can fix it with the others, but it's just easier to use Firefox.

I so happy you hung in there with me! The file link made all the difference, I just never had the right combination until you came my way! I sure with I could know hot to keep up to date, this have taken weeks on and off. You Europa are a star. Thank you for giving me all this time. When the 3Gs comes my way I know where to look!

Hi Europa Just wanted to say thanks again! It appears i am jailbroken just fine. I do not the sim is activated My sim is not finding signal and eventually it says no service. Ive not come across this in my other phones, any ideas? So I am offically 3.0.1(7A400)

I've never used pwnage tool, but if u wanna unlock an iphone 3g, update to 3.0.1 using itunes. jailbreak via redsn0w. unlock via cydia by installing ultrasn0w.

ultrasn0w will unlock it.
1. Open Cydia
2. Go to Manage > Sources > Edit in upper right corner > Add in upper left corner >and type repo666.ultrasn0w.com (be sure to use a 0 [zero] not an O in sn0w or you'll get an error) > add the source.
3. Go to Search and search for ultrasn0w and install it.
4. Reboot the phone and it should activate.

Clear cut advice with exact step by step information regarding exactly which file of the many I need to use, which was the whole problem from the beginning. With Ultrasn0w, no way would have I been able to know how to it. Again huge thanks, I am so very greatful to you and your time an effort with me. The others guys got me close for sure, but you gave me the exact focus I needed to get me to my complete solution, I hope everybody reads this and follows your lead. Take good care!
