Probably just one of many they submit just in case they go with it. Not a very attractive or practical looking idea, if you ask me, but they like to cover all their bases. Lest some Apple employee get all disgruntled with Steve's obsessive-compulsiveness and walk out with that design in his hand straight into the arms of a competitor.

Non-competitor clause in their contracts, I'm sure! Apple could sue.

I would love an iphone nano! I really hope they make one.

I know it can't be taken as gospel, but Apple have always stated they wont release an iPhone Nano
