Hey guys, well, I ordered a new computer last week, and it should be coming within the end of the week.

Background:

I initially connected my Iphone 2G and then my 3G when I got it, to my Gateway Tablet PC. I will not be taking that to school next year - instead, I'm using a desktop/netbook combo.

Issue:

I need to be able to sync my iphone 3g with my new desktop, when it gets here - WITHOUT losing all my backup-ed files: i.e. contacts and text messages that are not explicitly saved within iTunes.

Solution: ??????

Help me out. How do I move everything over?

just move your backup file over to the new machine.

I guess that would work if the media is all in the exact same location on the new computer and the OS is the same version.

You could just move the media and sync it on the new computer. I will erase what's on there first. Be sure to back up your contacts in Gmail/Yahoo first if you don't have Mobile Me. There is a contacts tab for this in iTunes.

Hmm thanks Europa: I just switched all my contacts with Google - what about SMS's though?

and Ramesh, would that work?

I don't see why not... I would unsync all media, so the backup consists of only "phone things" like your preferences, sms, etc. Then recreate your music playlists and resync your media after the fact.

When I synced to my new computer. I thought everything on my iPhone would he replaced with nothing. K sync and it transfers all my notes contacts and all my backup info to my new comp and I don't lose anything. The ony thing you need to do is backup your music files somwhere like a flash drive and then transfer to your new comp because your music library will he replaced.
