I think the worst part is that people knew she had severe mental instability issues and let the child be unattended with her.

Yeah it is really sad. A mix of horrible upbringing and stuipidity throw in some mental disorders and you have a physco. I read somewher that at least 10 percent of all humans are crazy , thats 600 000 000 physco's walking around.

At the end of the day we are simply animals with advanced brain and communication function. Throw in some severe mental disabilities and crazy **** can happen. Heck most species will eat their young, siblings, and even a mate. Doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things other than the fact that it was a tragic event that hopefully can be prevented from happening again.

All I got from the links were crappy mobile versions of Fox stations (they all seem to use the same code, including the affiliate around here). Anyway, I did not get taken to a news story, but rather a menu of sorts, with no mention of the story being discussed here.
