When Apple announced the new iPhone 3GS (http://mashable.com/2009/06/08/iphone-3gs/) and the 3.0 software at their annual WWDC keynote, the world was abuzz with excitement and anticipation. While the new device’s video features may have stole the show, the practical bunch of us saw immediate value in the new Find My iPhone feature for OS 3.0. In case you forgot, Find My iPhone is powered by MobileMe (http://www.apple.com/mobileme/) (http://static1.blippr.com/images/inline-face_05.png?1237094634) (http://www.blippr.com/apps/348225-MobileMe). If you lose your phone, it will not only help you track it down, but it will also let you display a custom message on the home screen and/or remotely wipe your personal content. Sounds pretty neat, right? 15 year-old Colorado resident Dustin Simantob certainly thinks so, as the service recently helped him recover his stolen property and catch some criminals in the process.

We received the story via email, and thought it was so remarkable that we’d share Simantob’s account of the incident in its entirety. So, here’s the story as Simantob tells it, as confirmed by The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado:
“so, my dad and I went on a 3 day father and son river trip and parked the car where we get out of the river to leave, so we get up to the cars and all 4 cars had one window broken and all the valuables taken from the car, so we ended up submitting our case to the near by cop and started on our 5 hour journey home, when we got back i remembered that i had set up the “track my iphone” on the mobileme site and immediately got on and tracked it.
it ended up being at a house near by where it was stolen, so i called up the cop that had taken our case and told him where it was located. as soon as i told him the address, he started to laugh, apparently the family had done a few things like this before and the local police had been trying to catch and arrest them but could never get proof that they had been the culprits.
now they had proof. so 4 police showed up at the door of this house and ended up getting mine and my dads iphones back along with my wallet and the Garmen GPS, they also were able to recover the two phones and wallet that was taken from the other car that was broken into. so thanks to mobileme we will all be getting our belongings back and a family of criminals will be put in jail.”
To recap: Simantob and his father get robbed and his iPhone happens to be one of the stolen items. Find My iPhone tracks down the phone to an exact address, where the police are able to recover the stolen property and arrest the criminals in question. If that story doesn’t sell the Find My iPhone feature, than I don’t know what will.

Very cool. I wonder how often this situation happens. I.e. how many people have recovered their iPhones either stolen or lost as a direct result of MobileMe capability.

you can get a subscription through amazon cheaper than that, at my last time looking there was one for 51.00 plus shipping. Once my trial is up I am going to get a subscription through there.

I think I would have just bought an Otterbox case and taken my iPhones to the river with me rather than leave them behind in a car. I always keep my iPhone on me at all times. So far the only thefts I have read about have been people leaving their iPhones on a table in a restaurant or in a car. There is no substitute for keeping a close, watchful eye on your iPhone at all times.

How easy is it to cancell the mobile me trial?

Might do it but seen as you have to enter your card details for the trial if you have to ring them up and go through it all to cancell then I don't think I will try it but if you can just click cancell my trial I might lol.

That's it? I've heard of a couple of people on here that got attacked by iPhone thieves. Drew Barrymore was on Jay Leno a while back and said that she gets together with all her friends at Christmas time (it's the only time everyone is off work), this year they were in NY and a mugger punched one of her friends in the face and stole his iPhone.

In that case I would probably use a magnum rather than a mobile me. LOL
Seriously, I have not heard of muggings like this but I'm sure it does happen. That is one reason I keep my iPhone out of view and in an enclosed case so it doesn't attract attention. If the subscription was $49.99 I might consider it but I still find it too pricey.

Canceling is as easy as going to your account settings and clicking cancel account. answer a few "why are you canceling" questions and you're done. You can also change your mind later on and reactivate the account just as easily.

If you are jailbroken, there are two other options: iLocalis and Cylay,
both offer remote tracking & control for a fraction of the MoneyMe,
I mean Mobile Me....

Mobile Me does a lot more than tracking a lost/stolen iPhone, and is well worth the money IMO. I don't know anyone who has paid the full $99. It's easy to find for around $50 on Amazon.com or you can get it for $70 in an Apple Store. I recommend researching it's features before calling it MoneyMe, it wouldn't sell so well if it was a rip off.

I trial'd it and came to the conclusion it was not worth the cost to me - even at $50
per year. If you want tracking and other features, other products do the job well for
less. Apple makes enough $$$ profit in my opinion, so I choose to go elsewhere.

Mobileme is actually quite good. I love the ability of calendar sync and category, file sharing and backup over the air...

one thing I need to clarify is after first year, will Apple charged me with full annual cost ($99) or I can get any discount from them?
I just don't want to move over my files and pictures to mobileme and have to delete it all after my 1st year membership over...
