I've been wanting to get a new case for my phone, and now is the time to really do it.

Not long ago I posted an image of the case I have, which can be seen below:

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/306/8138efedw304xh450.jpg

Here's my story:

The time is 7:30 am and I'm on my way out the door this morning to go to work. As I'm about to get into my car, I take my phone out of my pocket, and I swear some magic force picked it up out of my hand and tossed it into the air. As I stood frozen in shock, my phone goes flying out of my reach, hits the ground, the back part of my case comes flying off and goes underneath my car.....and the inevitable happened.

I rush to my fallen iPhone, hoping no serious damage has been done. I pick up my phone, examine it carefully, then scream out "F*CK!" If you turn my phone over, on the bottom left there's a scratch from it hitting the concrete. Since I cannot take a pic of it, I did take a pic of my case that is now coming apart....again.

I have an incase slider case I guess you could say. It has a "leather" backing on it, which is more like nothing but glue. It's a sh*tty case and is the reason for my phone being damaged. This is my second case, as the first one I had started coming apart after two short months of use. Same is happening again. If you look at the pics below, you can see in the second shot the hole that is now showing through the "leather."

While the scratch I have is somewhat small, it's still a scratch and reduces value of the phone if I were to sell it at a later date. I'm hoping I can take my phone somewhere and get the scratch buffed out. Anyone know if this is possible? I'm always very careful with my phones, so the fact that this happened, especially to my iPhone which I vowed to take such great care of, lol, really has me upset.

The cases that are sold in stores just suck. I did get mine from the AT&T store which doesn't help; they don't have a wide selection to choose from. I really want an otterbox case...guess I'll have to really get one now as I don't want to take any more chances in dropping my phone again, which ALMOST happened again a second time.

With all that being said, here are the pics of my phone case all screwed up. The first pic is kinda fuzzy but its supposed to show the damage on the corner. The second shot shows the backing coming unglued after being dropped. My screen protector is damaged too, luckily the screen is OK. I believe had the screen protector not been on it would have been damaged as well.

Mate,

I feel your pain. When i first got my 3G (yep... not the 3GS), i got mugged near my home by 3 p*ss heads. They knocked me to the ground and my phone went walkies out of my pocket- forgetting my personal safety i dived for my phone to stop it from getting stood on or worse.. stolen.

In the end, I lost a tooth and all i was bothered about was my phone which had a massive chip out of the corner. I was gutted. It was 3days old man- it was in a case as well.

Just take a few minutes and reflect on whats happened. Just get a decent case for it and you'll hide whatever damage there is :)

Sorry to hear about your experience, people are a$$holes. I would have dived for my phone too, but when it went flying out of my hands I became frozen and in shock, not really knowing what to do. I guess it was kinda like having an out-of-body experience; you're kinda just there in the moment with no control over anything.

As much as I'd like to forget about the little scratch on my phone, I can't. I now have another OCD problem that definitely won't go away easily unless I get my scratch buffered out, lol.

How bad is the actual scratch..?

I literally had a chunk (well i still do as i've not got the 3GS yet :( ), missing out of the corner of the phone. You could always replace the back cover/plate yourself. It's a little tricky, but it can be done. I've got a blue housing on my iphone, it looks good.

It's really not a bad scratch at all...I've shown my coworkers and they're like "oh, that's it?" lol

A scratch is a scratch. Best I can explain is if you look at the bottom left at the rounded corner, its kinda like a small nick when you drop something on the concrete. I can probably take a pic later tonight, but y'all would probably be like "oh god that's nothing" lol.

Any damage on the phone loses value and that's not something I want in case I want to sell it someday.

Keep it in a case from now on. Tie it onto your wrist so you don't do something as silly ever again.....

Thank you for sharing your experience with us Evolution. I'm sorry this happened. I would have been bummed too. I have an Incase Slider matte black. I hope these cases are not all like that. So far I haven't noticed any looseness with my Incase. I'm more concerned about water damage. That is why I just ordered Seal Line for my iPhone to protect it in rainy weather. I guess it pays to go with Otterbox.

Everyone drops their phone at some time or another. Even those of us that don't use cases. Regardless what people that recommend usage of a case think, you'll scratch the bezel of your phone even when it's in a case. It just happens. :dft012:wink

I'm definitely gonna look into Otterbox or something similar. The only thing I dislike is the fact that the Apple logo isn't covered.

I hear about people dropping their phones all the time which I don't understand. Most people are clumsy and have butterfingers, but that's not the case with me and my phone(s). Guess I was unlucky this time around.

Yeah... you get dust and crap inside your case. It can become a pain. I try to take my case of at least two times a week to clear it out of dust a debris. The dust etc.. get's stuck and when you phone moves about in the case it scratches it. It's sort of like a vicious circle, you buy a case to stop damage and when you get it, it scratches it anyway.

Brasso is good for the bezel though. Infact brasso was mentioned the other day in another thread, don't use the wadding, just use the liquid, but be careful with getting it on your screen etc.

I hate scratches or anything on phones especially the iPhone, I bought a 16GB 3G from ebay for £200 and dropped it and it had a chip out of the glass in the top right hand corner and I tried to ignore it even put a case on but I always knew it was there and it pissed me off.

I sold the phone on eBay for £260 so made a £60 profit off it

Sold my Nokia 5800 Xpress Music phone

Then bought a 3GS :)

So sad story of you. Feel sorry for you. If case is not useful to protect my iphone then why I should use it. Most of the cases in the market are just as like as yours.

Glad to hear you got rid of your nokia. They've got worse battery problems than the 3G/3GS. Nokia's have gone downhill in my eyes these last 3 years.

£260 is quite cheap for a 16gb version. I've been buying/fixing iphone 3G's for the past two months. The average sale for an iphone 3G 8GB costs £220 ish...

£260 is quite cheap. I would have bought that from you.

You have used £-symbols in your post. I take it your from the UK ?

Yeah from the UK

It did have a chip, a quite a few scratches around the bezel and lots of scratches on the back of the phone

I'm not getting my 3GS until October. I'm going to get the 32gb version. I just want the space lol. The prices o2 are charging, really are disgusting. It's because there losing iPhone exclusivity next year, other networks in the UK are going to get iphones.

Yeah its disgracefull how they still charge £342.50 for the 8GB 3G even with the 3GS coming out

But I heard that was because of the price apple sells the iPhone for to O2 is not much less than O2 sell it to customers for.

I heard about the iPhone going to other networks aswell but heard it was only the 3G and the 3GS is staying exclusive to O2

I think the next iPhone after the 3GS will deffinatly not be exclusive to O2

Yeah the 3GS will stay with o2. They will still get the first next gen iphones... and the other carriers will get the others. I think in about 3 years it'll be on most UK networks. The current prices reflect the fact that there losing the iphone next year

Oh I am, it could have been worse. Screen could have cracked and I'd be out $400 bux. It's the smaller things in life that really annoy me more than they should. One of my weak points.

Even though the scratch is covered I know it's still there and it's bugging me at this very moment.

Well, what if I tie it to my wrist and I fall and the phone hits the ground?! :D

Back in the day before I had an iPod, I was out rollerblading (lol) and was carrying my Walkman in my right hand. It was a Sports Walkman, so my hand was actually through a strap attached to the back of the Walkman that held it in the palm of my hand. Long story short, I hit a rock with one skate, feet went flying out from under me and, out of instinct, I held my right hand (with the Walkman) straight up in the air so it wouldn't get damaged. I fell backward with all of my weight on my left hand, breaking my forearm in several places. But the Walkman was fine--not a nick on it.

If I can do it, you can too. :ok:ok

LOL!! Dude that's awesome!

You know, when my iPhone went flying out of my hand, I just froze out of sheer shock. I mean, I didn't understand it. I took my phone out of my pocket to take a picture, I turn the phone sidways and the next thing I know, it goes flying in the air and I just stood there thinking "F*CK." Don't get me wrong, normally I go diving after an object in situations like this, but this time it was just one of those moments where I didn't seem to have control over my actions at that given moment.

Oh well...I'm kinda over the whole thing now but I still want the scratch buffered out. :p

I had a similar "frozen" moment a few years ago when my Christmas tree took a header. I was sitting on the couch with the windows open on an unseasonably warm day and a gust came through and just blew it over. I could see it start to fall and absolutely couldn't move to stop it. It seemed like it took it about 10 seconds to fall, too. Smashed about 25 irreplaceable ornaments. Grrrr.

Hope you find a solution to your scratch!

Yeah, looking back when the phone went flying through the air, it seems like it took forever for the whole thing to happen. It's like time slows for a second when things like this happen.

I think so LOL. I mean, I really don't see how the phone just slipped through my fingers and went flying through the air. I had it in my hands perfectly fine and then "wooosh" there it went...flying like a Frisbee, lol.

Evo, you could always just make an Appointment over the phone for the Gbar, then break off your vibrate switch and say that it came off in your pocket.

They WILL replace it.

I left my 3g on the sofa one day and got up to go to the kitchen, when i came back my dog was chewing on it. It had scratches and teeth pits/dents on the back of the white plastic, but no water damage. It just so happened that the vibrate switch broke off :dft012:wink  so i made an appointment before my warranty ran out and they replaced my phone with a brand new one, as i bought applecare to extend my warranty.

To describe how it went:
I walked in went to concierge and said i had an appointment they called my name. I tell the guy that my vibrate switch had come off and i cant find the piece and i can no longer take the phone off vibrate. He asks to see the phone, first thing he immediately does is take a torch and look down the headphone jack, then look up the charge port. He says ok let me have your serial number please which i told him, then he said your warranty will expire in 7 days its been a year, would you like apple care? I said yes because if the vibrate switch breaks again which i hope not i can still get it replaced. He replies ill brb to get a replacement and your applecare.

In, new phone, new applecare warranty, out.

Hope it works for you.

Thanks London, might have to give that a try.

I took my phone out of my case just a few minutes ago to clean it, and I guess I didn't notice there were some more nicks on the back of the unit. I'm very protective of my possessions if they're highly expensive, and if I can, I always find a way to return it for something brand new. I just don't like the fact that my phone has scratches on it. I know some things are unavoidable and all, but the whole flying saucer phone was out of my hands, literally.

First, I plan on ordering a new case. Once I decide on what I want, I might just break off the vibrate switch and return it for a new device. I will ask for a brand new phone and not refurbished....I don't wanna use someone elses sh*t just cuz they didn't like it.

Refurbs aren't bad. They're probably tested more than new units and I believe Apple replaces the outer case and screen. I got a refurb 3G in June that looks brand new.

psylichon
07-30-2009, 01:09 AM
Refurbs are awesome, but I think we're missing the point here.

Are you really going to soak Apple... I don't know how much money, but... a lot. You're going to fake an injury and make them lose money on a product that you use every day and LOVE just because of a scratch??

I swear I won't get preachy, but everyone just think about that scenario just for a second.

Londonrockz568

I think theres a difference between a replacement, and a refurb.
I have a replacement, its brandnew he had to take off the plastic and open a untouched box.

Refurb is when they open a different box. And Refurbs arent that bad because they've been opened by Apple and everything has been replaced with new parts then reassembled. If anything there's no difference from it and a new phone.
