View Full Version : Inspell Spellchecker -- Great App

I splurged and spent the $3 for Inspell, and so far am happy with it. In fact I can't believe I've had an iPhone for so long now, without a true spell-checker.
Yes, the iPhone's built-in auto-correct works well, that is true. But I can't count the number of times I've been replying to an important business email and wished I could at least run it through a spell-checker, just to be safe. Now I can, with Inspell on my 3GS.
Inspell checks your spelling while you type, in all places where you can type on the iPhone. It integrates well with the iPhone's editing controls, so it's easy to use. A red line is placed under miss-spelled words.

Selecting a misspelled word reveals a new editing option, "Correct."

The correction screen shows word choices, like most any other spell-checker in the desktop computer world, along with an add to dictionary option (nice).

Now if you are like me you might not want to use Inspell all of the time. Perhaps it might even slow things down on, say, a 1G/3G iPhone. To help with that there is an SBSettings plug-in that allows Inspell to be turned off and on at will. A nice feature is that enabling Inspell when in text-entry mode ecauses already-entered text to be checked, not just text entered after Inspell is enabled.

In closing I'd say the $3 spent on Inspell was well-spent indeed. I feel like my iPhone now has a long-needed feature. It's now one of my must-have apps for the jailbroken iPhone, along with SBSettings, Backgrounder, Rotation Inhibitor, and mQuickDo.

I recently purchased this one as well. And I can say it was well worth the money. It uses the same spelling dictionaries that Firefox's spellchecker uses, so you can get a feel for how it will work without having to spend the money.
What I really find attractive is that it works all the time and doesn't seem to slow down typing in the least on my 3GS.
Perfect for the spelling inept or those with Typo Paranoid Disorder.

How are you finding performance / battery life while using Backgrounder on the 3GS? Whcih JB method did you use?

I find it makes my typing lag a bit.

Go ahead and get it, because the lag seems to be improving a bit.

Yea I don't really notice a lag with my 3GS. But if there was I'd use SBSettings to keep it disabled till I wanted a spell check. For instance, I could have typed this reply, and then enabled Inspell, and it would check everything I've already typed.
Prior to this I was using the single-word spelling app, by copying and pasting suspect words into it. Not very elegant (but much better than when there was no copy and paste!).

I used purplera1n to jb, and it was a breeze.
As for performance and batt life with Backgrounder, it has not been an issue for me as I only use it as needed, and of course the 3GS has got the horsepower. I use mQuickDo as a task manager and kill stuff I don't need running. Actually, I'm killing the built-in apps Mail, Safari, and iPod more than anything.
I use Backgrounder with a few streaming radio apps that would otherwise quick if switching to another app. I also use it when I want to do something else when inside another app (especially apps that want to start up from scratch--no saving of state). Very handy to have the ability to do this.

Thanks Mike. I'm getting very tempted - anything to watch out for with purplera1n, or steps to take prior to using it?

Nothing really. I just made sure I had a sync and a backup right before doing it.

I'm leaning that way. Any advice / things to look out for that you've come across? Did you also use purple ra1n? Oh, and I'm guessing no restore from backup - just sync once you're JBed right?

I used purplera1n RC2 to jailbreak. I believe I restored as a new phone.

Mike / Napoleon - thanks for all the answers, and sorry for the threadjacking.
Just opened a new thread to ask one question, after having just used purplera1n - over HERE (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/3gs-purplera1n-jailbreak-reference-question-52091.html#post494366).
