MobileMe iDisk

I just uploaded backups of my music purchases from iTunes to iDisk. Thats 1,579 files totaling 8.79 GB. Basically, since ~2.5 years ago, virtually all of my music comes from iTunes. For me thats a substantial investment.

So, I'm just wondering. Does anyone know how safe files are on iDisk? I'm assuming Apple uses some redundancy and backup method for those disk areas. Anyone have the inside scoop on what my music collection is sitting on and how safe it is?

I'm sure the server has redundant disks and probably backups, but I doubt it's meant to be super redundant. If you may remember, Apple had a pretty major MobileMe outage when it came out last year. A percentage of people lost their email. Since you're backing up your songs there, that should be fine. If you were planning on only storing them there, I'd recommend against it.

You can only download it during purchase. After that you will not be able to get it again without another purchase. :gasp: So backing up is paramount. :smile:

In the past, I figured a copy on my computer and another on the iPhone would be enough. Lately I'm feeling I need more.

That's good to know, I don't buy much from iTunes I just assumed it would allow you to re-download free, like the app store does.

As a business model, though, that's just practical. There's nothing, then, that would keep me from downloading a music file 20x. Granted, it's tied to my iTunes account only, but still...

While Apple's site and whatnot says they won't let you re-download your music, I've seen cases where you can. It may depend on how nice a customer service rep is, but it can be done. I've spent a LOT of money with Apple over the years on iTunes and I think they can make an exception for me, if God forbid, I lost all of my music. I have onsite and offsite backups of my music, so that chance is almost 0.

Don't count on it. It's clear that the customer is responsible for backups.
