View Full Version : Otterbox Defender?

I was looking at the Otterbox Defender for my 3G and was wondering what the people who had it thought about it. I've read review after review, but I would like real ppl to actually comment :laugh2:
I work in a jail, so my iPhone goes in my cargo pocket. I haven't dropped it (yet) but my Crackberry got dropped every now and then from pulling it out/putting it in my pocket.
I don't really need the belt clip, so I'm glad it's detachable. Im using a leather case with the plasctic screen protector I got from the AT&T store. They said something about the Otterbox? (Not sure if that was the case) being recalled due to echoing because the case covered too much of the phone? I don't remember exactly what is was, only that the case was $44.95, which is what the Otterbox costs.
Any help would be appreciated :2cool:

I have one and really only use it for outdoor stuff and when working/fabricating in the garage. Keeps the Iphone safe and resistance to most things. I've dropped, tossed and stepped on it and it seems to hold up very very well. And it doesn't feel extra or too bulky for me, but you might change your mind with the belt clip. The rubber cover doesn't slide into your pocket very well. Plus the clip is very secure with the iphone facing in-ward.
I would say for it, if you don't like sell it on Ebay......and they are cheaper on ebay.

I have one but I'm an outdoorsman who appreciates the extra protection it's not anymore difficult for me to slide it in and out of my pocket than than the ifrogz I had on it before I have dropped mine from the top of the combine onto the blacktop driveway that's the best test I've done not on purpose BTW but all was well even from that fall! I cant wait to see what happens to it during deer season! I know I like this case cause I can treat my expensive phone no different than a $20 go phone with no worries I like having that relief!

I have the V1 and the 3Gs, and the biggest difference to me is in the clip. The V1 clip was decent and kept the phone well. The new clip does not keep the phone as well. Since you will be pocketing the phone, you don't have to worry about the clip though. If you get this case you will have no worries.

Why's that
Towards the end, the iPhone casing cracked loose on the side after the 20 ft drop @ 8:30, and the iPhone won't power on.

I don't know when I'd ever expect a $50 case to survive a 20 ft drop... It is by far the most durable case for an iPhone. Read reviews. Also, I belive there's a company called Element something or other. Their cases look great and are supposedly quite durable. They don't have the reputation yet tho and hey want $100 per case.

I admit that was a pretty extreme drop, and something that would most likely never happen to the average iPhone user. The furthest drop most people would experience is just a few feet.

Indeed. I saw the series of six foot drops and stopped the video and ordered one. Should be here within a week or so.

I just got mine in today for my 3GS, and so far I like it.
Few things to note, though that portrait texting is a bit trickier. Because the case adds so much body to the phone, hitting the keys on the edges is a bit harder if you use your thumbs. Also, the audio has gotten quieter, but since I'm on silent pretty much 99% of the time, but for some of you this could be a problem.
As it turns out, it's the dock cover that muffles the sound, not sure why because there are cutouts for the speaker and mic, but maybe there will be a new version that isn't affected by this.

Try moving homescreen icons to different screens. It is a fun task with this case.

I've noticed this as well. I've also noticed bubbling in the screen. Is this avoidable?

Yeah search YouTube for the baby powder fix. Baby powder works to stop the bubbles, just look up the technique there so you know how to do it before making an attempt.

Actually, I don't have a problem doing that, I tested it just to see what it would be like :)
I think it was a 3.0 update that made moving icons easier. I remember on 2.2 with my V1 moving icons from one screen to another was a pain, because one they would install on the first screen by default, which meant dragging it to page 5. Of course every time the screen moved, an icon got pushed to the other screen.
It's pretty simple just hovering the icon over by the edge of the screen, and it will scroll through screens, just don't move the icon and it wont move any apps out of the way.

My fingers must be too fat!! I have to struggle to get close enough to the edge of the case to get the icon to push to the next screen.

I have the same problem with my fngers. In safari right now, it's pretty difficult to hit the window viewer button. And return on the keyboard.
Also I could not find that baby powder video.

Could be :dft011:wicked_smile
When you're moving icons, to another page, try grabbing the icon on the edge farthest from the direction you're moving it, seems to work really well for me.

Out of curiosity, is the case a lint magnet? Also, for those with the white case, does it get dirty easily? And if so, is it easy to clean? Thanks!

The case is not really a lint magnet. I have yellow, black, and my wife has pink, so I cannot help on the white case. Cleaning for me is a breeze, I just dust off the hard plastic and the screen protector using microfiber. I put the skin part in clean dishwater and just clean it by hand. I then dry it thoroughly and put it all back together.

There are much thinner cases that survive the normal "6 foot" drop just as well as this bulky Otterbox. Just my opinion, my co-worker has one on his who sits right next to me and this thing is just too beastly for the elegant iPhone. The only time I think this case would be appropriate is if you're a construction worker or something...

Or for someone who tends to drop their $600 phone when getting out of their truck. I've had other phones and have tried all types of cases. And this one is by far the one that gives me the most confidence.

Not really a lint magnet, but it does have the textured feel to it, so certain things do stick to it quite easily. However, cleaning the rubber part is pretty simple, most of the stuff mine has collected came off just by rubbing my fingers over it. If it ever does get really dirty, like mentioned above a simple wash in some warm water will do the trick (rubber part only!).
I just got my white one in yesterday, and I love this thing. My friend has the black case on his 3G, and for whatever reason, the black appears to make the phone look much bigger when compared to the white.

I don't know... The ones I've seen sit flush against the bottom of the iPhone. With that in mind, they would not plug in to the iPhone all the way. This being why I asked.
I don't appreciate the tone.

This one (http://www.imaxpower.com/) should work as well as designs like it that use a cable to connect the battery to the iPhone. There are several including a Richard Solo unit, IIRC.

Oh I have not yet seen those kind. Thank you! I assume you recommend the Richard Solo?

I don't know either, but I guess if you're asking then you already researched the IIRC three or so battery backs that are made for the 3G/3GS to see whether or not they fit with other cases, and you're still not sure. My guess is that if they don't fit using a different case (incase slider perhaps? Seems to be commonly used), that they definitely won't fit with the OtterBox, since it is quite a bit thicker than most cases.
It seems I might have mistaken exactly which type of battery charger you were asking about. Is it something like a JuicePack or just one that plugs into the charger port, like the stock iPhone charger? If it's something like the stock charger I would guess that they probably do work, since the stock charger works. However if it is something like the juice pack, then definitely not without taking it out of the Otter Box.

I was thinking of the ImaxPower, the Just Mobile Gum/Pro (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/just-mobile-gum-and-gum-pro-portable-usb-power-packs/) and the Richard Solo as examples of batteries. They are among those that use a charger port connector cable rather than relying on the phone being dock compatible. You can find reviews of these devices on YouTube (I like "itsmemorphious" and "lockergnome"). You can also find reviews at ilounge.com (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/accessories/) and of course at Amazon.com.
I like what I've read about the Gum, but I'm still looking myself. Today is only my 7th day with my new phone.
YMMV

I didn't realize there were battery packs that did not sit flush with the phone. So, yes, one of those that connect like the charger cable would be great.

I have the Just Mobile Gum Pro. Has worked great the few times I have had to use it. I keep it around from plane trips and such.

my .2 about this case...i love it, provides excellent protection. i let my kids play with my phone and i have no worries. i have the white case and i was working on my truck my hands got dirty and greasy which got on the phone as well. to my surprise it wiped off very easy. i thought it would stain the silicone. my v1 had an otterbox as well and after two years i sold the v1 and was able to sell it in mint condition. i highly recommend this case

Look up the fix for this using baby powder. Just blow a puff of baby powder on the phone side of the protector and the bubbles will be gone.
