Conventional wisdom has it that the tools for JBing the 3Gs will be out AFTER Apple releases the 3.0.1 firmware update. How soon this will be is anyone guess.

The beta is out now, so I would guess 5 days max

It's a way to break away from apple's software and open up whole new possibilies to customize your phone. It has it's own "unofficial" apps and some are alot better than the regular ones. For example: The 3g jailbreak had an app that could take video.

I can confirm this works! Easiest jailbreak I've ever done.

Will report back. I tried installing Rotation Inhibitor, and it put my phone in an infinite crash loop even after a couple reboots. Apparently you gotta be real careful of non-3.0 compatible software. I'm downloading the 3.0 firmware now so I can restore, and rejailbreak.
It was super-snappy though. SBSettings felt like it opened up almost before I swiped it! We'll see if it gets any laggier with time, but I think with the processor on the 3GS, we're not going to see and slowdown problems.

Does this Jailbreak unlock your phone?
And can you still get apps of the appstore if its JailBroken?

Jailbreaking and Unlocking are two separate things. First you jailbreak, and then, if you want, you unlock. Some programs will do both, like Redsn0w. If you use PWNage Tool or QuickPwn, you do them separate.
The Dev Team has directions for unlocking with ultrasn0w after you jailbreak with PWNage tool here, http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/128573459/ultras-nowwhich which is what I suggest for a 3G (since I've heard redsn0w is buggy). If you want to JB a 3GS, you have to use the purplera program, http://purplera1n.com/. I'm waiting for an official Dev Team release (hopefully QuickPWN).
Yes, the apps from the apps store will still work and you can still buy new apps etc. You can still do all the things you normally could do, it just adds more functions.

Very true. But if that's the only reason you want to do it, I'd wait until you're ready to sell it as you'll have to redo the entire process at that time to get all your personal info off of it and make sure it's on the latest FW.
