Hi,
I'm sure this has been addressed and already answered somewhere here, but I can't find anything. I have a 1st gen. iPhone, unlocked/jailbroken with 2.2 firmware, using T-mobile.

Can I update it and keep it unlocked to use with t-mobile? If so, where can I find instructions for this. I used big boss in the past when updating, unlocking, etc. but not sure if he has a guide for this yet.

Thanks,

Laina

I was in the same boat as you. I was running 2.1 on a 1 gen iPhone. I update via iTunes to 3.0. I was still unlocked but it seems that I'm not jailbroken anymore. I haven't looked into redoing everything again so I'm content with this configuration.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you can update your OS, then re-jailbreak/unlock and use with t-mobile.

Is there directions anywhere that tells how to do this step by step? Thanks!

You really don't need directions if you update with iTunes. Under the iPhone in iTunes, there be a button that says update software. Or something similar. Hit that button, say the magic words, sprinkle a little pixie dust on the phone and presto chango!

I know how to update in iTunes, but I am not an AT&T customer, so if I just update in iTunes, my phone will not be able to use with T-mobile. I need a guide to tell me how to update, and also keep my phone unlocked and jailbroken or re-unlock to use with T-mobile. Thanks.

From what I have read updating the firmware will undo the jailbreak on your phone. Probably the best way to do it would be to update to 3.0, and then re-jailbreak and unlock the phone. Search for redsn0w, that is a utility that can jailbreak and they also have a utility to unlock the phone so that you would still be able to use it with T-Mobile.

I'm just a newbie though so make sure you do your research! lol. Good luck.

you must not be saying the magic words.

You can update with iTunes even if you are on tmobile. It will not lock you up. You will still be on tmobile and serveice will not be interrupted. The only cat h is that you won't be jailbroken.

I'm in 3.0 with tmobile on a 1st gen. I updated with iTunes from 2.1. I'm still up and running. Just not jailbroken.

Just an FYI. Updating you phone in iTunes will always remove the jailbreak. With a 3G or a 3GS, it will also remove the unlock. The only reason your phone is still unlocked right now is because it's a V1 (1st gen). Otherwise, updating would have unjailbroke and relocked and you would have had to use reds0w or PWNage Tool and ultrasn0w to jailbreak again and then unlock.

of course. I didn't update with iTunes because i didn't know what I was doing. Pre-3.0, if you updated with iTunes, u wod have been relocked as well. So I knew the dangers. It's just that I read several people with 1st gen tmobile had updated with iTunes and were succesful.
