so what is the proper way to install winterboard?

I tried 2 times, and both time my phone will not boot after, all it displays is the apple logo then it shuts off. I have the iphone 2g with OS 3.0. can anyone tell me why it is doing that?

Just go into Cydia, search for Winterboard, and install it. It's as simple as that. It sounds like you need to restore the phone.
