the iPhone V1 and 3G has 128MB of RAM. (not storage which is between 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB) The OS and main system functions use a large portion of that 128, which leaves an average of around 40MB available to run apps. This is one of the reasons that the New 3Gs has 256MB of RAM. More available resources to run apps smoother, plus I see it as preparation for multi-tasking - since that is one of the main things that the iPhone is still lacking in.

thx....great info.
would that program "backgrounder" make the iphone crash then>?
Probably not. Technically, the phone has enough memory to handle everything as it is now. I will say that backgrounder is going to run you down to the wire, but I think that if it was crashing phones, you would see a lot of posts about it.
